European (but made in Malaysia )
products advertised for small home networks and are actually worth it compared to the competition
slick Website and WinBox design - NO UNNECESSARY TELEMETRY (or webscripts bloating the webpage) !!!
good insights on products (f.e. block diagram etc…)
software updates
cool forum with active people that are willing to help
Negative (keep in mind that i’m a beginner):
horrendously bad documentation (way too many features aren’t documented properly and if they are, its a total mess –> docs are scattered throughout the help page)
as a bash user: the scripting language is niche
NOT beginner friendly: is more a double edged sword it depends how experienced you are, but there are so many (undocumented) features to achieve the same thing that your just overwhelmed. There are no documentations that explain simple networking basics only those features like they expect from you that you know what they’ve been made for.
broken WinBox UI f.e. dropdowns not applying profiles properly (f.e. dropdown of WLAN → Security → Authentication / Encryption, apply those to a WLAN and you’ll see nothing has been selected)
Overall: 7/10 keep it up MikroTik I like your direction - if you’d put better work into your docs, my rating would instantly jump to 9/10
bloodynetworker is a self-certified beginner so their 7/10 is entirely valid.
My random-person assignment is 8 or 9 simply because I know of no less complicated way of doing several different things I do with various Mikrotiks. Product+ROS solves problems, inexpensively.
The key for me is bloodynetworker’s last point in their Pro group. Were it not for the detailed information either already searchable on the forum or answered after enquiry, I may not have persisted with Mikrotik at all.
Mine is around 15 years of Mikrotik AP’s, with 7 devices at home starting with the old RB153 as first device.
And to be fair, in the IT field for 30+ years, a certification is usually not worth a lot as it’s just a paper if people don’t use the learned knowledg on a regular base.
A part from that, I agree with most of @bloodynetworker points.
I would add that there needs to be made a difference in the documentation on the WIFI and Wireless devices. But that does not show up in the old docs because WIFI did not exist yet. So, can be confusing at times.
PS: I don’t see the issue with the broken Winbox UI. Since there is a linux version, I’m happy
It is quite clear where @bloodynetworker is coming from. The criticisms, even if subjective, are at least arguably valid and founded on experience. Taking into account the positives expressed, the whole contribution is quite balanced.
