Can't manage my switch

Hi all, I’m sure I’m doing something wrong but I simply can’t access my switch. I can see it in Winbox but can’t access it’s IP address. The MAC address corresponds and I’m directly connected to the switch via Ethernet cable. I can access both my RB3011 router and the cAP ac.

Connect to: IP address
Or simply click the ip from the list below and it will be copied in the connect to box..

Yes, the IP address 192.168.88.1 does get copied. But I can’t access it, I receive a timeout.

But as i see on your attached photo, you write “http://”…
Connect to box needs just the IP… nothing more.. no HTTP…

I didn’t write http://. I clicked on the corresponding line and the http://192.168.88.1/ appeared automatically.

I tried to delete the http:// and clicked on Connect. This time Winbox tried to connect itself but failed to connect.
Just to make sure, I will repeat - I have direct wired connection to the switch and I have wifi disabled on my laptop.

Which is the IP address of your laptop?

192.168.5.173

OK so I manually changed my ip to 192.168.88.xx and I was able to connect to the switch (via http://192.168.88.1 in Chrome as expected since it’s SwitchOS). In System tab I change IP address of the switch to 192.168.5.202 and since then I can’t connect to the switch again regardles how I change IP address of my laptop. In the switch the IP settings were default, DHCP with fallback. I wonder why the switch wouldn’t take address from the DHCP on the router?

Update: After a while suddenly Winbox can find the switch on 192.168.5.179 and I can connect to it. It’s a mystery to me but at least it’s working now.

My 5 cents: don’t use DHCP to configure addresses of any important gear (which includes LAN equipment) … unless there’s a really (and I mean REALLY) good reason for that. Not even static DHCP leases. It can happen only too easily that DHCP server is not available at time when that gadget restarts … and in the worst case, multiple gadgets will have the same fall-back address configured.

I agree. Static is always better in management use.
