To reduce the downtime, can I simply remove the stock fans and plug in the Arctics or has Tik changed the pinout? AI insisted the pinout is changed on CRS3xx, but without giving me a real source. Has Tik published the pinout somewhere or has someone done this successfully?
LLM AI's often produce crappy answers to technology questions (or the answers are intentionally vague). There is no reason for MT to change pinouts as it would complicate their parts procurement. Check current fan wiring if you are unsure (hopefully wires are not all black) or check the stock fan datasheet. What is the stock fan make and model?
Another important question is if your replacement fans can produce sufficient airflow. This of course greatly depends on how you use your switch. The stock fans are capable of handling worst case scenarios. Check the datasheets. You may be able to adjust fan speeds.
Be careful with a direct swap. MikroTik doesn’t always document fan pinouts publicly, and AI claims about changed pinouts are often based on assumptions rather than real sources.
Check the stock fan wiring against the Arctic fan specs first (12V, ground, PWM, tach). If the signals match, it should work, but verify RPM monitoring and temperatures afterward. Also make sure the Arctic fans can move enough air—quieter isn’t useful if the switch starts running hotter under PoE load.
Hi, I replaced the stock-fans with the Arctic-fans. They are much more silent, the temperature (switch sensor) increased by around +5°C. I could hear the stock fans through a closed door, with their high-screaming-noise.
The replacement-process itself is for the inner fans (fan 1 and 2) difficult, because you cant use a normal screwdriver. A PCB is in the way, maybe a ratched could do it. So you have to loosen the whole "bar", which separates the two compartments of the switch. Then you can lift the fan-part a bit to insert the screwdriver. The fan-screws sit very firmly and are of a cheapo China quality (soft metal). A bad combination, but I saw these cheapo-screws also with other vendors...
Fan 3 and 4 are easely to replace.
You have to take care, fan 3+4 ingest air, fan 1+2 blow air out.
Once done, the PWM-fans work correctly, the pinout seems the be the standard, RPM is shown in ROS (Health).
