Disappointing performance on Bite

Dear All,

Bit disappointed that the latest Chateau 5G (D53G-5HacD2HnD) fails to match the performance of the old Soyealink B350 I had from Bite.

I've set the MTU to 1468, unchecked 3g, set the channels to 1,3,7, updated to the latest RouterOS, LTE firmware and RouterBoard firmware but I still see 20-30Mbps slower speeds than from a random Chinese device.

Is there anything else I can do to increase the speed?

If wifi have you tried to connect to some Ethernet port ?

Stop making random changes to configuration.

Speed was down to c30Mbs before making the changes on the Chateau. Getting over 100Mbs on the old Soyealink

LTE speed

That Soyealink B350 is apparently some branded Huawei device. I would not call Huawei "random". It is one of the market leaders.

The Soyealink B350 is LTE12 (from the specs I found) and the D53G-5HacD2HnD is LTE20. It should give you at least the speed of the b350.

I suspect there is something wrong with the lte connection. Please show us the lte interface stats.

And, to repeat the question: do you connect via wireless or cable?

RSRP is quite borderline. SINR is okay-ish. RSRQ as seen is good.

Does the b350 also provide LTE cellular stats? If yes, maybe the b350 connected to different bands/cells. Or did 3CA instead of 2CA. Or has better antennas. We can't know from here.

What is your benchmark?

"I used to have 300mbit down, now I see only 270mbit" is different to "I used to have 50mbit down, not I only see 20mbit"

As a rule of thumb, always use a wired connection when performing throughput tests.

Is Chateau placed on exact same place where Soyealink was? Even if is on same place, Soyealink may have better antenna and also fiew cm position difference can have significant impact on signal. That RSRP is bad so don’t expect better speeds until is placed where you can get better values.

Try to use MT mobile app to observe signal values while moving Chateau around to see if you can get better signal.

Sometimes you don't need to move it, you just rotate a bit, and you can get better values, depending what the cells are located.

Indeed. I also have a Chateau model and can confirm. Rotating can improve signal significantly. Try in 45° steps, watch signal 1-2minutes and repeat. Remember the position where you had the best rsrp.

sinr 19db is much better. rsrp still bad. rsrq is meh. but the main difference is band 1 vs 3.

Try "band=1,7". So the modem can't use b3. And see how that works out.

Huawei makes excellent LTE-devices, we have a few Gigacubes and not a single Tik device can reach the stability (of the LTE-connection), throughput and speed. My personal experience is that my last 3 (or 4?) Tik-LTE-devices had a poor LTE-performace, and I mean really poor, in an almost unuseable way. Only the new Knot is very good for its LTE-category. So I cant speak for the device in question, but tbh, I would assume Huawei has simply the more sophisticated device.

Thanks for everyone's help. I've thrown the Mikrotik in the bin and put the 6 year old Soyealink back into production for a faster download and no complaints from Oma.

That depends on brand model, comparing just brand vs brand is not fair in this case. Mostly depends on used modem CAT in particular device model. For example, log time ago when I purchased mobile internet LTE subscription from my ISP I got CPE device Huawei B525 which is CAT6, it had poor performance, when I purchased and switched MT Chateau LTE12 throughput almost doubled at same position. I didn't have information from Huawei device admin interface which bands are used for LTE connection to compare with Chateau, but speed improvement was obvious.
