Engenius 802.11AGB EMP-8603 with RBs work?

does Engenius 802.11AGB EMP-8603 miniPCI cards work perfect with RBs? It’s possible (and work) the TX regulation?

Have just prepped an RB433AH with 1 x Engenius 802.11AGB EMP-8603 miniPCI (connected to Omni) and 2 x Mikrotik R52H miniPCI connected to 2 x 90 deg Sectoral Antennae.

On the bench all seems to be working perfectly. (Make sure to connect to the proper MMCX connector on the Engenius miniPCI - it has one for 2.4Ghz and one for 5Ghz)

Site should be up & live in production environment by mid next week - I’ll let you know then.

I have 2 EMP-8603 with RB411 working on a link with 14Km between 2 islands and works smoothly.
They are up since January. No problems until now.
I must say that they have passed through several thunderstorms and are still working well so, yes, they are good options, and if anyone needs no now the correct tx power, don’t forget to add the offset of 7dB for 5Ghz or 9dB for 2,4Ghz to get the real power.

What I have to use in TX Power tables to get (in 2.4GHz) 100mW, 200mW, 400 or 600 mW? Isn’t the same as with the other cards?

I installed the card and TC power marks only 19db.

What I have to do to know the real TX power? Specs says about 600mW of power in bg mode.

First, a very good Christmas for all.
Sorry for the late response.

When i mean to add 9 is:
600mW is 28dB, so 19"TX power in mikrotik" + 9"offset" = 28dB Real Power

If you need 100mW, this is 20dB, so 20-9=11, you will need to select manual TX power and set de power to 11dB.

The same apply to 5Ghz, but the offset is 7 in this case.

My name is Lawrence from Dbii Networks and there always many questions regarding “Real power” for certain cards such as XR5, 8603, F50-PRO. I recommend this website if you have any questions on understanding what is happening:

If you really wanted to test out the actual power vs what the software is telling you you can try this method if you have the test equipment:

If you hook up a cable and attenuator, or read the power of the cards through the power meter or spectrum. What you see is for example:
F50 = 28-29dBm
R5H = 32-33dBm

These are negative numbers you see on the power meter----Lower is better----Ours is 4dBm better than R5H. R5H is actually rated at 25dBm so ours should be around 29!
Secondly, DONT make a comparison with the 28-29 you read on the power meter to our (offset power) of 27. They have ZERO relation. Before the signal enters the power meter there are a lot of attenuators.

This is only used for your reference on one way to test the actual power (b/c otherwise anyone can claim a high output power) This sample was done on only 2 cards we bought vs 2 cards from our production, so it’s not a good sampling rate to accurately determine the average of all the cards since there are small variations between cards. We do know what our average is, but only through your help can I get an accurate number of what you are experiencing as customers :slight_smile:

*I do have one question if you do have 8603 cards that don’t work. Cause I only have one of them that I’ve tested and I’ve attached the picture. But we were trying to test all manufacturers ESD protection and only with this card the shield cover was soldered shut (which was odd). After we opened it, we tested and there was no ESD protection at all. There’s a slot for it, but it was never added. So JorgeAmaral quote saying that it lasted through thunderstorms is quite interesting. As I mentioned, I only have one card so I can’t prove nor disapprove but I would be interested to know if your cards have the same empty slot.

I have about 20 of those engenous cards all on 5 gig. All at 130+ feet all attached to pacwireless 19 db aluminum enclosures(i just use the boxes as antennas and use 12 X 16 X 8 steel boxes for the boards etc.) with no lightning arrestor or 1/4 wave stubs. No failures yet after six or 8 months. We get quite a few thunderstorms in my area of Texas.

I use those radios because I like the external power connection to keep the power off those tiny pins on a high powered radio. But again I am a guy who thinks POE SUCKS TO NO END and gas arrestors are a joke.

Make some 5 gig 1/4 wave stub arrestors for less than 30 bucks a piece and you can make a sale at my place.

eddieada may I asked what type of performance you are seeing? CCQ, ping times…etc (as reference)

The external power connection does have some uses I admit. Is there a reason why you chose this card versus others? Was it the price/performance, or would performance/price be not as important?

The only issue I have is when information is misrepresented. It’s not so much as an extra dBm here or there, but more about other features. As you are aware, we make cards…but we do tests to see how the final result compares. I think customers like yourself benefit in the end, marketing is marketing…but how it performs on your network & what you see is what counts right? :slight_smile:. In this scenario, we just noticed that what is said was not on the card. A lot of local “asian” companies have this problem where they might say it’s “green” (apparently the popular word now), or in this matter “ESD” when they clearly didn’t do it (based on the card that I have). I just think that when I buy something, it should have what’s listed whether it’s a card…or anything. Everyone is working hard to make money…

I think it’s great that your equipment is working well…a lot of our other customers in other countries are not so lucky. Then again…people are still using XR5 (doesn’t have any protection either) as a backhaul and it seems fine too :slight_smile:. I think the main thing is not whether there are thunderstorms, but when the “induced” lightning does strike and hits your equipment…then it should matter more. I’m not really allowed to post up pics, but our customers have boards that are completely charred. Some have the ethernet ports burned…it’s actually quite interesting to look at, and also to smell a sweet charcoal sensation filling up my cubicle.

Making a $30 arrestor like you mentioned is not the issue. The biggest would probably be that if we did make it, and you only bought 50…we’d lose $. So, if you can prove that the market is there…at least 100 sold or something/month sure I’d make it :slight_smile:

It is known that this engenius is a 800mw so why did u put it 9dB ??
i have a question concerning this: i have an antenna of 13dB connected to the card which has a 800mW of power, so what should i put for TX power and antenna gain ?. somebody help!! is there any important configuration for better performance. ???
