Hap AC2 - low memory

Hi everyone!

I’m running a hap ac2 on v6.49.13. I use it as a hotspot. Right now I only have 3% of the 16mb memory left.

I already installed userman and ntp. the issue is that the logs say it is running out on disk space and that usermanager will consequently be stopped.
Do you have any idea on how I can have more memory? including deleting packages or unnecessary components?

Later on, I am thinking of installing a VPN as I would like to make a white list that will connect directly to the net and filter anything that is not on it to go through the vpn.
I found earlier on this forum that it would be possible to configure the router to do so through the firewall, but it’s not really clear yet.
As it may require a little bit more space, just for the rules, is there any way to free some space?

I did some back up of the config and I’m willing to reset and netinstall it from the very beginning, but will that really help? or is there any other solution?

Thank you very much.

Main problem is that your device only has 16Mb of storage.
So you need to choose: uninstall packages and move their function elsewhere or face the consequences of low memory.
There is no other sure way to free up memory.

Netinstall might help clearing out possible leftovers from previous config (provided you restore through exported config, not using binary backup).
But that’s no guarantee.
However, sooner or later you will run into the same problem.

PS on ROS7 it’s a lot worse for those 16Mb-devices.

Just to let you know experience regarding using ac2 with ros7.
I have got several ac2 which are used as wireless ap’s managed by capsman.
So each ac2 has got only 2 packages:
Routeros,
Wireless.
(There was a split since 7.13).
Right now, under ros 7.18.1 stable there is only 1 mb free of total 16.

hi everyone.
thanks for the answers.
i really intend to stay on ros 6.49 unless a version of ros 7 allow me to reduce the usage of the memory.
what if I downgrade the ros? is there an other more suitable version that would be efficient?
or is there any other practical solution that would not require an install of usermanager?
is there a way to find the packages that would not be of use so I can delete them?
thanks!

my plan B would be to buy a way used and cheaper mtk router, install onto it a very old version of ros that is able to handle userman, and install the VPN on the current hap ac2.
any advice?

Take a look at Hex Refresh.
And let it handle VPN too.
