It is my second Mikrotik device. First one I configured was a wAP-ax and I was able to log on its wifi and it configured without problem.
I received the second one a few days ago. I powered it up but no mikrotik wifi is broadcasted. I pushed the reset button before applying power to use the backup boot, but no wifi broadcasted.
I can see the device in WinBox, but I cannot log in. I get a bad username or password message. I used the password from the device sticker.
I pushed the reset button for more than 30 seconds but the led did not flashed or change color.
I suppose that it is possible to connect to the device with an ethernet cable for firmware update and device configuration?
Very likely this is what you intended to do, but not what you actually did.
Passwords on stickers are very often liable to be mis-read, the font is stupidly small and there are several characters that can be easily misread, like oO0, Il1, G6, B8, S5, Z2, https://gajus.com/blog/avoiding-visually-ambiguous-characters-in-ids
so, even if you already checked it a zillion times, try again, with a magnifier or taking a picture of the label and then magnifying it.
Last case:
Connection via ethernet to ports 2-5 should be fine, ether1 not as in the default configuration it is WAN/internet and connection is prevented from it.
I compare the tag information on the device with the tag on the card that came in the box and the device details are the same. I retried to entered the password in Winbox several times without success.
I tried to connect in Winbox via an ethernet port, but the mac address is different from the one on the tag. So I suppose the password on the tag is not valid.
Tried to use Netinstall, but everything is greyed out except for the latest firmware version downloaded from mikrotek.
In order to use Winbox, does the PC need to be on the same network of the router wifi?
The PC and the bridge interface of the access point need to be on the same Broadcast Domain, with access to each other on Layer 2 for access by MAC address or at Layer 3 they need to either be on the same subnet or need to be routable to each other. That is the short of the answer which applies to many different circumstances.
In my case the hAP router does not broadcast wifi, therefor I cannot connect via wifi? Anyway to force it to broadcast wifi? Should I order a replacement?
Mac address different only on last byte?
I am asking because it could be that the MAC on the label Is that of ether1, while you are connecting to ports of the bridge.
But there has been at least one reported case of devices with an exchanged label.
In any case netinstall should work, though It Is really tricky to run It.
If the device Is brand new It would be better if you return It and get a replacement.
I have a dual boot system with win11 and linux mint. Instaed of using a VM in windows, should it be simpler to go strait to mint should you have an example?
I am transitioning from windows to linux, so I am still a novice, but have the motivation to step away from windows
I suggest you give it more of a go, with a reset. The best instructions for that which I have found are here [Forum post on reset]
The other thing to be aware of is that after a reset you will have access to the bridge and therefore to webfig and also for winbox on any port other than ehter1.
I have been on Linux for 30 years, first with dual boot. I stopped dual boot about 20 years ago and used an old computer if I really needed Windows. Lately, I have had a couple of laptops and it was easiest to dual boot, and I have found the registry hack after 30 years which allows Windows to work with Bios in UTC and show the correct winter and daylight savings times, which coincides with getting rid of my old satnav, which was my last windows dependency. The new one does wireless.
Every dependency that is apart from Mikrotik's Winbox, because I can't get Winbox for Linux to work on MAC addresses. A thread for another day, I think.
