Hi to you all Im a little over my head with this system at this point and could use some help with equipment setup from start to finish or just tell me where to start until I have each step done.
EQUIPMENT
RB450G
18DBI OMNI ATENNA
BULLET2
NANOSTATION2
And pc setup or installed with mikrotik iso cd program but i see winbox and that works with windows.
How should I set things up for partictions like windows and lynux I saw a setup with both on one drive I think I just have an overload of info at this time so many ways to setup router and the site has so many version of things.
So I have router in case and looks like it works fine not sure what cable goes where, Oh and also I have a SMC router/modem gateway from ISP withch I hope works smc8014wg I think thats it.
No licence yet 22 hrs left it tells me.
Would like to start with host pc setup then wirelees for a neighborhood hotspot if i can thats what I told whosaler I would like to do and this is what i have now to make it all work would be nice.
Any help from you pro’s would be nice just to let you know I can build pc but the softwear well thats another story.
Im sure I can follow information to get up and running will read and watch howto vids also just not sure what I need and dont at this time.
17 and 0 up till now yes i can see there are cosultant available for a fee and if need be will get to that.
this will be a small personal system and have spent a fare bit of money till this point and I cant get it working yet but each day the light gets brighter and maybe I will get there some day with it.
I still need a licence I think board has the newest OS installed but want to make sure I can get it working first If not will need to goto a windows base or something with more startup step by step I see lots of info here and examples but im still not sure what I should have in place to make it all work.
So lets start with this info I have
gatway router
rb450g router
one or two pc’s if needed and two lappys
plus the above equipment poe stuff and antennas.
I also see that mikrotik is very big and its all about money I would think.hope this is not so true I just think the startup info is all over the place and no docs with routers just the com site.
I am not sure I understand exactly what the problem is, but to get a small system going using the RB450G and the NANOSTATION2 as a AP you would need to:
Set up your SMC in a bidge configuration, so it works only as a straight through modem.
Connect and set up your RB450G as the main router (set up internet connection, NAT, DHCP server, firewall, etc.)
Configure and Connect your NANOSTATION2 to the RB450G
Pilgram thank for your reply. Nothing is done at this point just installed router linux or routeros on a Stand alone computer with two nic cards and a wireless nic card.
Comuication from softwear to router would be a good start and what to plug in where. Have no Licence at this point if that matters and 22 hours left on hdd setup.
Do I need to have networking from a windows PC and one for the linux routeros PC by ethernet cable first? then use winbox to setup there looks to be a few ways to go and I know it should be an easy thing for most network persons maybe Im just thick lol.
So tell me where and what to get working first and I will do that from what I should connect and where.
Well I have winbox working and can see a connection with anttenas and can get internet with cat5 so its getting better.
will also try what you said pilgrim if smc router will let me do that
yes I will need help im sure what I dont understand is router is installed with key so do I need to by another?
It has 3.25 programs on it and now is 4.2 I think. Next when I used the cd program what is that all about and do I need a drive with linux on it like this or is windows drive ok to use with winbox or the other programs they seam to have like dude and netinstall so mutch to read and take in lol.
Pilgrim I picked up your bb video also and it will help im sure.
Now if this info works for me and can get wireless working then anttenas after all that is good will check out hotspot setup but that looks far away at this time.
your video was for a 411 router but info should be same so at this time not sure if I have license that works or if I need the cd linux install would be nice if just using winbox will get things done.
but I read that you license is held on what ever hard drive you install on so does that mean router will work to setup but will not hold information?
thanks in advance john I just love this thing and its not working yet lol
OMG Pilgrim looking at what you have would be fine with pc or laptop at my end.
then nano wierless out from there great for home and see how far the bullet2 and and omni antenna will reach my brothers place from me.
So yes what you did in your picture would be just fine to get working after I see it working will help me understand things better.
Have just installed it all it will help me understand routeros im thinking.
Also got winbox to work from linux and linux can run alot of things now with wine now thats cool. So now if I can get to know mikrotik wow so good.
I can see how most things work kinda but not sure about tx and rx setting up anttenas through router.
And at this point to log into nanostation and bullet they have the same ip as 192.168.1.20
I don’t have any experience with the nanostation, nor the bullet. But the unit you connect to your RB450 as AP should be in AP-Brigde mode - or similar. Be sure that they are connected with an IP belonging to your LAN. Ideally as DHCP clients and then make a IP reservation in your mikrotik to ensure that the unit will always have the same IP.
Those marked with D are dynamic and the rest are fixed.
I am starting to see how things work will check out getting modem from isp also.
So as i see it now each antenna and nic card needs an ip address setup first?
after we get a hit on them we can move to wierless setup. it can only get better
You can use the static setup mode, but then you should choose an IP outside the IP pool defined for the DHCP server in your RB450G e.g. is your RB450 LAN interface is 192.168.0.1 and the IP pool you defined for for the LAN DHCP server is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.150 The you can choose 192.168.0.250 and 192.168.0.251 for your AP’s.
When using the Nano or the Bullet as AP’s (like in the diagram above) then they should be in Bridge mode as in the example.
