I have an issue, I have a hotspot and I see many dhcp leases on my network and 80% of them are mobile phones. I have noticed that they have a good signal but they never connect. Now the reason they don’t connect if because of lack of education. I am doing this in Nicaragua Central America. This is brand new service I am offering. I had some people actualy telling me that they connect to the network but when they open facebook app, or whatsapp they have no connection. I came to the conclusion that they just dont know they just don’t know they have to register to the hotspot.
I was talking to my brother about this issue. He travels a lot and he told me that in some hotels and starbucks hotspots actually open his browser automatically and redirects him to a page saying that this is a hotspot and requires registratis etc.
This is what I need, how are this companies doing that? User searches for wireless signal, one they connect it atomatically opens a popup redirecting them to the login page.
I have read all the hotspot manual and I didn’t see anything or missed it. Can anyone help me out with this issue? How is this possible to do? This would be awesome to be able to have!! Please let me know!!
Hello dannyboy.
Actually i had the same problem with my hotspot so i did some research as well as some posts in this forum and guess what?
Apple devices …no problem. As soon as you connect to a hotspot which need verification or acceptance a pseudo-browser opens up aand the user understands that he must do something in order to proceed.
Android devices prior to version 4.0 (i think…) unfortunately will show the wifi icon as soon as the device takes an IP. Unfortunately that icon messes the brains of some people and they dont understand that this icon is not about internet connection but WIFI connectivity! Anyhow, the user must open a browser and as soon he tries to access a webpage…bam..the hotspot page will show up.
Android devices with version later than 4.0 will show a notification to the user as soon as the device’s IP is assigned. That way the user will understand that he must do something in order to has internet.
Yes I started reading about this too. I found some info and I see what you are saying.. That’s to bad that android does not have the feature to open up the browser. The other solution is to put the SSID “Open Browser after connect” jej… I will keep up with this, is very important for me since this is going to be a city-wide wifi. First tower up and testing and I had more then 120 androids connected. But from there not all have idea what to do.. I am also thinking to through an education campaign. But this would off been the best option, If somehow the AP could send some type of alert to the users phone to open the browser… The genius that comes up with that, well its a genius!!
Now that we are here, I want to also do the following before I start charging. I want to be able to redirect expired users to a html page. I have been looking but all I find are ones that you actually have to change the users ip address and put them on a expired list etc. What I want to do is for the MKT to redirect to a pay now page when the hotspot triggers the error msg that the account has expired.
