How many concurrent wireless users can ap support

I am using router board 411 and am wondering what is the max amount of wireless clients the ap can serve before speed degrigates. I have heard doing some types of qos can help support more users but I do not know where to start. Any help would be appreacted.

Thanks

I believe the general recommendation is about 20 for an A/G card, not sure on N.

it also depends on the amount of traffic each user is pulling or allowed to pull, so it may be even less or more by 10 or so.

but in real sense, this is very poor!

These aps are running B/G cards so my next questions are the following.

  1. What is the max number of connected devices inclduing phones that are connected but not doing anything before you notice any problems. I know the max staion count is 2007 but this seems an unrealstic number.

  2. What is the max number of connected devices doing tcpip traffic before you notice a problem.

  3. What is the max number of users limited to a 1x1 connection each running at full bandwidth before you notice a problem? i would assume 25 users since you get 25x25meg of a g radio? So then if we limit it to 512x512 we should be able to get 50 users before a problem begins?

Thanks again

The general traffic between the AP and the clients will start to cause problems around 20+. A single user on bittorrent sending out a fair bit of UDP traffic will cause the AP to stumble pretty quickly. I’ve got 31 on a single R52H (upgrades on the way) and it works beautifully until someone turns on torrents. I can have around 5 people watching Netflix at the same time without issue, pings stay below 10ms.

I wouldn’t put 50 people on a single card unless I had absolutely no way of improving the situation and I would probably start turning customers away before it got to that point. You would just be asking for trouble.

All said, I still haven’t sufficiently loaded up an 802.11N access point, so the capacity may be higher, but the underlying problems are still the same.

it all depends on the traffic being generated by the clients, but in general they say 30 but things have changed to N, so could be more, but determinant is traffic being generated

I saw AP’s with more than 30 clients online. If AP and clients can use TDMA, the signals are good, and the tarrifs aren’t to fast, it can works OK.
Without TDMA I recommend max 15 clients per AP.
