Is your link color wrong for VLAN/Ethernet? link speed HOWTO

Many try to set the link speed of snmp devices by checking the box and entering 100 for fast ethernet or 10 for ethernet, but it’s totally wrong. It is measured in bits…1000 bits is 1kbps.

Right Click the link-Go to settings-Type-Click the three dots to the right of the field-Navigate to the link of your choice-Double click and enter the appropriate speed in the Snmp Speed box. If you have many flavors of wifi or a Vlan then click the red plus and make your own link type and adjust it accordingly. NOTE…you MUST check speed and enter the appropriate value in the speed field; this goes for new links or old links. So just setting the link type believing that the color will change as the line becomes saturated is incorrect thinking. Manually set all the speeds so you can see the pretty colors when your pipe gets flooded. I haven’t restarted my dude server, but it won’t set speeds that I adjusted when I created my own links.

Gigabit:
1,000,000,000…1000Mbps… 1,000,000,000 bits: 1 and nine zeros

Fast Ethernet:
100000000…100Mbps…100,000,000 bits: 1 and eight zeros

802.11G:
54000000… 54Mbps…54,000,000 bits: 54 and six zeros

T3:
44736000… 44.736 Mbps…44,736,000 bits: 44 and six zeros

Ethernet/802.11b
11000000… 11Mbps… 11,000,000 bits: 11 and six zeros or 1 and 7 zeros

T1:
1544000… 1.544 Mbps…1,544,000 bits: 1544 and 3 zeros

ISDN
128000… 128 kbps…128,000 bits: 128 and 3 zeros

You can figure it down to the kilobits just remember to think of each 0 as 1bit space…kilo is 1000 bits, mega is 1 million, and giga is 1 billion.

I set the speed of a 100Mbps line to 3Mbps(3000000) just to test it and it worked like a champ once I generated the traffic. Holding the arrow over the link will still report 100Mbps, I haven’t figured out how to fix this…maybe you can’t. If you need to know your WAP speeds add a note on each.

What about, full duplex and half duplex?

I have bonding link that get exactly 100 mbit hdx !
Should I set it as 100 mbit fast ethernet?

I would set the type as fast ethernet AND manually check the speed box and set the speed as 100000000. Dude auto-senses the speed, but if you use traffic shaping or throttling you can go in and change the speed according to the rate that the line actually runs at, not it’s auto-sensed speed. I’ve found that setting the type on links that I edited or created doesn’t work. By the way…in v2.2 the snmp speed seems to be only set on the gigabit ethernet link…don’t know why but it is so.
