I have recently bought Mikrotik RB1100AHx2 and I’m really disappointed that I can’t use Metarouter feature. I have red many forums etc, everybody wrote that Metarouter feature is working on RB1100AH not on two core CPU version. I have latest stable ROS 5.16 and when I try import virtual OpenWRT image openwrt-mr-ppc-rootfs.tgz everything goes well, BUT when I want to enable/start is says:
Couldn’t change MetaROUTER - not enough resources (6)
I have 8GB microSD card inside. I have bought this router especially for this feature, because I need to run OpenWRT for additionally functionality.
metarouter is not working on RB1100AHx2 currently. We will work on it later on, but currently there is nothing you can do to run MetaROUTER guest in this board.
I posted this to another thread, and apparently those who are desperate for this feature either don’t know how to use search on these forums, or your e-mails are not getting past my spam filter, or you aren’t really that desperate: http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/metarouter-on-rb1100ahx2/59441/15
I’m very eager to know if it works, but I still don’t know for sure that it does because I don’t have an Hx2 or AHx2 at my disposal to run tests on (plenty in production, but none that I can take offline right now to just play with). Thus, I still need someone to test my procedure for me. If you e-mail me at the address I provide in the aforementioned post, I can hook you up.
Obviously it would be better if it were officially supported, but in the meantime, the Hx2 sells for the same retail price that the AH used to sell for, so if you NEED an 1100 that can run MetaROUTERs, and if my procedure works, you’re still paying the same price for the hardware that you would have paid before, even if you aren’t taking full advantage of it.
I’m thinking about switching from my trusted RB450G to RB1100AHx2 but I need MetaRouter or any other yet unrevealed virtualization solution for missing OpenVPN features. Don’t feel like having this part split to another piece of hardware.
It is possible, today, to run MetaROUTER on RB1100AHx2, as long as you are okay with an unsupported solution, are willing to put in a little effort, and are okay with using the AHx2 as if it is an AH instead (sacrifice dual-core functionality for single-core…even with just 1 core, the router is plenty fast: after all, the single-core AH was no slouch, and way faster than a 450G); see here: http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/howto-enable-and-use-metarouter-on-rb1100hx2-and-rb1100ahx2/70248/1 (I actually need to update that article, because MikroTik changed the RouterOS package format some in 6.14, so my original instructions for extracting the kernel file from the NPK stopped working after 6.13.)
However, you probably don’t want to. There are stability issues present in the PowerPC version of MetaROUTER that affect the entire RB1000-series (1000, 1100, 1100AH, 1100AHx2) that are still being worked through. Supposedly the RB800 is stable, although I haven’t tested it myself. If you do end up wanting to try this, you either need to use 6.20 or wait for 6.23 to be released. (Alternatively, you could try your luck with my trick on an RB850Gx2, which is the same form factor as a 450G and not much more expensive. I have had good luck with it in my tests and no stability issues so far.)
I have so many different on-going things that I think I may want to wait that MetaRouter is natively supported
I’m not in a hurry to acquire the new Routerboard.
I finally gave in and bought the RB1110AHx2. I was kind of hoping that a new version would come out since this model came out long time ago but nothing yet. And I found one for half price, still under warranty.
Apparently still no MetaRouter either. That’s a long road since when you said you were working on it
Time to find a solution for my OpenVPN connected clients.
