Can PoE be disabled and/or is it safe to connect non-PoE devices? My little experience with PoE is that they run HOT and even make the cable hot. I have zero PoE devices so I would rather avoid all that heat production.

I am based in the United States and need a power supply for the unit. Any options for me please?

Regarding connecting a battery for backup power, are there any simple kits or premade cables I can purchase?

There is a non-POE version of the switch for quite a bit less money. Look for that css610-8g

Yes, POE can be disabled per-port.

If device is not powered by PoE then Poe switch shouldn't provide power to it so no worries here. You can manually force the PoE on in the switch settings so you should be careful here.

But if PoE is left on auto then there shouldn't be any problems with that.

Heat is generated when something draws power from the switch so if you don't have any PoE devices connected you shouldn't have any problems with that. Maybe a little bit higher power consumption (2-3W) due to extra electronics needed for PoE but that's negligible.

  1. you can switch PoE out off (per port), but even leaving it on auto you shouldn't have any issue. The only issue may happen if you force it as ON, (and only with very old devices).
  2. the built-in power supply should be 100-240V so there shouldn't be problems, or is the built-in power supply fried and you need a spare part?
  3. battery powering it may prove to be tricky, the DC jack wants 48-57 V, i.e. 4 normal 12V batteries in series. It would really make sense in your case to sell the switch and buy a;

    which has no PoE, accepts 12-57 V on the jack and can use any 12/24/etc. external AC-DC adapter of suitable amperage. Ideally you can use a 24V AC-DC adapter and use a single 12V battery, or - IMHO easier/better keep it powered at 12 or 24V at all times through the batteries and charger using one of these (example only):

It should be 5W without attachments, and at most 11W, so you would need a relatively small battery to power it for a reasonable amount of time.
