I recently replaced my old hAP ac lite with a hAP ax3.
So my original plan was to setup the ax3 as CAPSMAN and move the ac lite to my bedroom and have it running as a CAP but in the process i discovered that the old CAPSMAN and new wifiwave2 CAPSMAN are not compatible with each other.
Ive been looking at mikrotik wifi Acess Points but i cant seem to find any that support wifiwave2 so that i can run the ax3 as CAPSMAN, are there any AP that support wifiwave2?
You don’t even have to use AX3 as capsman controller. RB4011, Hex, RB5009, … can also be used for that function provided you install wifiwave2 package on them.
There is also the L0009 that is an AX devices, thus using WifiWave2. But like hAP AX lite, only has 2.4Ghz AX.
And the Audience support WifiWave2 drivers which get you “Wave2”/“Wi-Fi 5” and works with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. The RB4009 will work with Wifiwave2, but you lose 2.4Ghz if installed. Neither of those support AX (“Wi-Fi 6”)
IMHO there is no need to run capsmans in the majority of scenarios users come up with.
The only time is if you are running a large group of APs like 5 or more NOT a typical home scenario.
OR, for some reason you need complex filtering ( block users on an network from accessing same network users that are wired ).
THis is usually not the case and more easily avoided by moving off those to a separate vlan and ssid anyway and any access required or denied handled by simple firewall rules.
In other words, you are busting your gonads for no reason. Drop this silly concept of capsman and simply run the ac lite as an AP switch. Its a 5 minute setup at most. https://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=182276
Ok thanks.
I do realise that i dont really need CAPSMAN but its fun to do and nice to have it working. I also wouldnt mind getting a better AP and this kind of gives me a excuse to spend the money on one.
Roaming is working great with capsman Isn’t there a topic about mikrotik device controller ? I presume that would be something like ubiquiti or tp link omada ?
