hi all
this is my first post here and i wish i could have an answer for my problem
I have linux and windows installed on the same machine and i wish if i could install Mikrotik beside them or install it on my linux "Debian "
I know that Mikrotik is linux OS so can I install its programs on Debian ??,
if not could I install it on a partition beside my OSs???
thanks in advance
RouterOS is a standalone OS, it could be installed on a multi-boot system, but it’s programs can’t be installed anywhere else.
Running it in a multi-boot system makes no sense, because a Router must be online all the time.
Thanks a lot for your help
is there any material i could read to be able to configure this OS?
i wish i could be able to block some sites from my home network(Adult,…)
and remove some P2P programs protcol like (torrent, emule,…)
is there any way to do so on this OS?
on top of the forum there are 9 links that will help
now I know what I shall do
should I try stable version 3.30 or 4r1 is OK?
any one of them is fine, I suggest v4rc
does it matter if I have a new LAN card
will MikroTik detect all LAN cards or should I buy an old one??
It depends on the card, RouterOS supports all kinds of cards. A small list of tested cards is here:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported_Hardware
also here:
http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/2.9/guide/driverlist.php
I found it ![]()
but I have a fool question
is 4beta free or it needs a lic?
ofcourse it needs a license
v4 is no longer beta
it could be installed on a multi-boot system
when i run it, it formated the hardisk without asking about partitioning
v4 is no longer beta
this RouterOS 4.0rc1 is the last release as i think, isn’t rc1 means not stable release yet??
RC means Release Candidate. If no serious bugs will be found, it will become Final.
Of course it will not ask for partitioning, you have to use something like Partition Magic to do this.
ok I will give it a space but how can i tell it to use this and leave this and mount that???
you can’t. As I said, RouterOS is meant to be a standalone system. It’s not customisable, it’s to be used AS-IS
it could be installed on a multi-boot system
then how can i install it beside another OS???
can’t i make it a server for programs,movies,… ???
I installed mikrotik 2.9 today and it works fine but I couldn’t do what I want
first I searched the net a lot about how to divide the speed of the net equally on all the users
second how can i make a login page asking for username an passwork?
I did my best but couldn’t reach any thing
I hope I could find help here
Do you mean an FTP server? You can. But you’re better off using a dedicated FTP server. RouterOS is for routing and related tasks.
Why 2.9 and not 3.30?

thanks for the reply
i found that simple queue will limit bandwidth for certain IP and it is unlogic to add from IP 2 till 254 and set them to the same Speed
I want a better method to set all my users in the network to a fixed speed?!
I am sorry to say I could understand the text but couldn’t apply them
I don’t know from where shall i begin
isn’t there any site with pics to expalin?
