Hi. Im new to microtik devices and interested in connecttion two devices via FO (fiber optics).
I have such schema.
Short description.
ISP goes to LAN1.
The distance between the router (MikroTik L009UiGS-2HaxD-IN) and the switch (MikroTik CSS318-16G-2S+IN) is up to 200 meters.
So I have few questions:
can i connect them via FO ? - I think Yes, tell me if Im wrong
Yes, you can. It’s just another type of interface as RJ45 or WiFi. The difference is that the SFP cage could host the FO connector or RJ45 connector
or any other nonexistent type yet as the FO module is just a “current” ↔ “light” converter, most popular one, but there could be other combinations.
The Mikrotik’s ones should work with no problem. Just use proper set of them.
The right one If SFP is MM then use MM cable, if SM then SM cable
BTW, used SFP modules are so cheap that you can buy a pile of them and test which ones work.
I would reccomend the use of S+85DLC03D (If you have Multi Mode)
Or S+31DLC10D if you use single mode.
They cost basically the same, but these 10Gbit GBICs have instant 2,5Gbit/s in your config (limited by the L009) and once you replace the L009 with an RB5009 or so, you will get 10Gbit/s. If you want to do backups on different places, your 1Gbit Link as you planned will get saturated, the 2,5Gbit/s in you current config will have some Reserves.
In my Opinion, single Mode ist much more future proof (I know, the SM 100Gbit/s GBICs are more expensive, but on the other hand 200m with 100Gbit/s isn’t even possible) and especially if you have to dig a trench for your line you just don’t want to dig again in 6 years when you upgrade your ISP to 5Gbit or so.
The last Multi Mode Fibre I installed was 2014 and it shot me already in the foot since 250m Link on OM3 can’t really deliver more the 10Gbit/s - thank god I have 8 Cores in this cable, so I can use 4 Links together…
For the cable, it depends where you live. 200m is not readyly available at normal hardware stores, for private use I use Elfcam single Mode Cables (with S+31DLC10D) like this:
You can’t bury this cable directly in the ground (OK, technically, it is suitable, but i definitely reccommned the use of some empty pipe and a shop vac to suck the cable in).
For professional use I have other suppliers or splice the cables by myself, but if you have some empty tube and are private User, the Link above should be a reasonable price range and last rather long.
