Mikrotik RB4XX with Sierra Wireless MC7710

Yes firmware can be found in their webpage.
You need to use DIP (DirectIP) type.
For upgrading the firmware you will need a Windows PC (with 32bit) - not sure if it will work with 64bit windows.

Hi uldis, thanks for the help.

I have upgraded many routers in my time but never a 3G mini-PCI card. I understand i need a Windows PC but what else? What are the steps i need to take in order to upgrade this modem.

You need Windows PC, able to connect the modem to the USB port and then run the firmware file and follow the on screen progress bar - the upgrade takes up to 10minutes approx.

Hi uldis, thanks for the info.

The modem i have however is a Mini-PCE-e card not USB.

This is for installation in an RB411UAH

I know, but the only way to upgrade the firmware is by using a Windows. Maybe you could contact your Sierra card distributor, maybe they could upgrade the firmware. Some users have used some laptops that has option for mini-pcie 3g cards. Or you can look for a mini-pcie to USB adapter to attach to Windows PC.
Soon we will have RB14eU adapter which you will be able to put into x86 box.

Thanks Uldis, I have returned the modem to my supplier who will in turn send it to Sierra Wireless to be upgraded. A very long way round but at least its getting done.

So after weeks I finally got my modem back and I still cannot get a connection made.

How do i check the firmware version from the Mikrotik to make sure they upgraded it?

disconnect ppp device. Double-click on the PPP interface and click on “info” button.

HI,
I CONFIRM WHAT bjorncmtec SAID.
I TRIED THE MC7710 WITH FW : SWI9200X_03.00.08.02AP R3715 CARMD-EN-10526 2011/11/14 18:42:43 (SEE FIGURE BELOW)
IN RB411U WITH WITH FW 5.25 AND THE PPP INTERFACE CANNOT CONNECT TO THE MODEM (SEE FIGURE BELOW).
IN ORDER TO READ THE FW VERSION YOU CAN USE THE LTE INFO COMMAND (IF YOU HAVE NOT DISABLED THE DIRECT-IP:

 port firmware set ignore-directip-modem=no

I WILL TRY THE 6.4 ROUTEROS FW VERSION.

LTE CFG.png

Did you try different channels? Is the SIM card OK? Did you try without modem init?

@DaxStox you MUST use ROS 6.4

On a side note I have returned my Sierra MC7110. I am rather going to buy a LTE Router and connect it to my Mikrotik via ethernet.

I have spent far too much time and money trying to get this thing working

Here my solution:
RB411U with 6.4 FW without LTE Interface:

port firmware set ignore-directip-modem=yes

Info Channel = 3
The router can read Info
INFO CHANNEL 3.png
Now I can’t connect, no ping google ip 8.8.8.8
I will investigate the SIM, and the modem init string.

Bye.

Do you have “dial on demand” checked in PPP tab of interface properties? If so, please uncheck it and see if you still see your connection as running.

Yes, I have. I tried to uncheck and the modem is gone to disconnected status from waiting packets.

If the connection is now disconnected it only means it was never really connected. That’s what a dial-on-demand does. I suggest to keep dial-on-demand unchecked.

  1. set dial string to ATDT
  2. allow all auth. protocols
  3. try without an init string
  4. does your provider require to login? if so, use your credentials
  5. if you don’t need a special APN use only value “internet”
  6. is the channel 0 correct for data transfer?

What does the log say?

Thanks bysard!

The correct configuration is using data channel=4 and info channel=3. With these values the modem is connected and I can ping the ip 8.8.8.8.

This cfg works also with the modem MC8292!

I can still use my modem init string and other settings.

Great!

Hi all,

I would like to ask for advice.
I’m trying to get Sierra Wireless MC7710 on RB411U, so that the interface of LTE.
Unfortunately, when you turn on RouterBoard I displays only the ppp-client, possibility of LTE on selection is not.
I upgraded the firmware to the latest MC7710 on Routerboard I have version 5.26 and firmware 3.07. even so, I do not have a choice of options for interfaces. :frowning:

Please advice.

Thank You

@ djvook LTE is not a PPP dialer, it is a seperate interface that you need to create. You also then need to add a DHCP-client onto that interface for LTE to work.

Please create a seperate thread as this topic is specifically to do with Sierra Wireless MC7710

Hi,

I use a mini-pcie to USB adapter to attach to windows 7 PC. The Windows7 recognize the device but not cant found the drivers. Where I can download the drivers?

Just an update on our trials with MC7710 and RB411.

MC7710 FW versions with RB:

Non-compatible: (MC7710 detected by RB, Couldn’t connect to live LTE network)
SWI9200x_03.05.19.04 (DIP)

Compatible: (MC7710 detected by RB, Connected to live LTE network, UL & DL on LTE)
SWI9200x_03.00.08.02 (DIP)
SWI9200x_03.05.23.02 (DIP)

There is a latest FW for MC7710, haven’t tried that yet.
