Hello Normis, Sergis and everyone else,
First I want to show off by saying that I have gotten my MTCNA, MTCRE, MTCTCE, UBWA and the UEWA. I still have MTCWE, MTCUME and the MTCINE to go…
I have learned a lot about Mikrotik OS and about RF on the Ubiquiti on both trainings, I took the UBNT because I was told that before taking the MTCWE it’s better to get down the RF basics with these courses.
I want you to be as honest as you can be with me on this dilemma I have. I am setting up a big network; it’s a community Wi-Fi network. I love Mikrotik; I have been using Mikrotik for ever as hotspot servers. I started using them for this project, and all seem to work well, the only thing was that I used the grooves metal with the Omni antennas they bring. Penetration and coverage was poor.
After taking all the courses, I learned that is not so much the power of the radio but the gain of the antenna and good routing protocols that really makes the difference. I also learned that UNIFI uses “HRS” High Selectivity Receivers filters with optimized circuitry to reject adjacent, co-channel interference.
Since this is going to be a community Wi-Fi network, this caught my attention. From my understanding, the receive sensitivity on my AP will improve though improving the connectivity of mobile devices at longer or semi obstructed locations.
My initial thought was to use all Mikrotik for this project. I am definitely going to use is for my Backhaul, routing and the User Manager as Radius, but now I am debating on the last mile equipment.
Here are my questions for you;
Do you think I should stick with the Unifi and airmax antennas for the last mile equipment?
Or do you think the BaseBox 2.4ghz with the Airmax 2.4ghz 90 or 120 sector antennas will do the same job?
Has any of you ever setup an large hotspot in an apartment complex or city using Mikrotik Wireless equipment as last mile?
I know you guys are experts on Mikrotik and this is a Mikrotik forum, but I really would like your expert opinion on this.
Thank you and Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
