Most basic question that needs most basic answer

**Gud day every one, I am very new to this Mikrotik thing, its just that our security adviser wanted it. So I’, trying the 24 hour trial version.

My situation is this, its just a simple network but the existing router is recommended to be replaced by Mikrotik OS.,

our current setup is:
PPPoE internet connection (they are using username and password in the current router), so I guess I’d just do the same in mikrotik.

–[modem]—[DLINK Router]–[24port main switch]–[Access points and other switches]–
IP’s are 192.168.10.0/24
The router is also our DHCP.

I know that I have to put 2 Ethernet cards in the Router OS, one is for the modem and the other is for the switch to the network,

now I am very much lost in the configuration of this OS, and I cant seem to find a simple way to set this up, they are all talking about complex setups!, all that I want to do is…
\

  1. Replace the DLink Router with Mikrotik Router OS
  2. Be able to share our internet connection to the whole network(Just like the DLink Does)
  3. Set up Firewall(After the First two)

thank you very much everyone! and I hope you give me instructions in its simpliest form! thanks and more power! I know this is a powerful Router OS and I know I’m gonna love it!**

Ok well, You need to bridge your ethernet ports, so when you plug your modem into the say ether1 and you plug your switch into ether2. You need to create a bridge to allow the connection between to to.. You do this by going to bridge section creat a bridge hit ok, then go to ports add 2 ports, each port having those interfaces. and thats it! good luck that should get you started. - Jordan

thank you very much!, I will try this one now!, I’ll post here what will happen! thanks!!,

and also do I have to “Maquarade”? i read about it in the other thread, well I’ll just try it with and w/o these, thanks again!

Hi Jordan ;
I don’t agree with your opinion here .
i think he should make a pppoe client associated with ether1 which it will be connected to isp .
and give a new ip range to ether2 and maybe he need to only setup a dhcp server with ether2 .
setting a dns server and now he have a router like the D-link he has .
if he made a bridge between the interfaces then he exspose the client to the isp and everyone will have to use a username and password for his account .
will be waiting your feedback
with best regards .

You may be wright, i am not that great with PPPoE, But he could setup a computer from the modem, login using that computer, creat a network setup and then from that computer plug it into the routeboard, then my setup would work without having to login with each computer… I dunnno. Let us know how it goes and if you have any problems. -Jordan
