need help to optimize network using vlan

Hello everyone, I’m new to network setup, and I’m seeking some guidance on how to configure my network. Right now, I’m in the process of learning how to work with MikroTik routers, and I’ve come across the concept of VLANs, which I understand is important for this task.

My primary objective is to optimize my network for gaming, and my current internet service provider offers a speed of 500Mbps. I’ve heard that VLANs can be a key component in achieving this.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or tips you can provide to help me set up my network for gaming performance. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and expertise with a newcomer like me.

Welcome to the forums…

VLANs have nothing to do with gaming performance. If you want the best latency for gaming, the defaults will provide that. Anything else you add, will add CPU time and latency. Terms like “gaming acceleration” from other vendors are 100% marketing bs, because you can’t accelerate your packets above what your internet provider gives you out of the wall - only delay or drop some of them. Someone replied with a very sensible solution last week in another thread to a similar question: prioritize the gaming console/PC over everything else. That’s the best you can do if you have issues - and unless someone is “borrowing” movies on BT all day, 500M is more than enough for an average household.

VLANs can isolate gaming systems with open ports for added security, but unless HW offloaded, it’s not a free ride either.

im sure you can do that, based on what kind of router you own. you can turn off any energy saving option which will lead to more bandwith, lower latency and TTL (Time to Live) but also use more energy. there are some advanced settings but those requires good knockledge in networking.. optimize routing, mtu, and and…
