I have updated a number of routers to the new wifi-qcom-ac package.
We also have outdoor access point.
Here in the Netherlands there are different country regulations for indoors and outdoors on 5GHz.
The ‘old’ wireless package included the country ‘etsi 5.5-5.7 outdoor’ for this.
How should this be set up correctly without this?
I don’t see a setting anywhere to set whether the radio is indoors or outdoors.
You can of course manually lock a channel, but that is of course not the neatest solution.
Maybe someone from Mikrotik can look into this?
You should at least be able to indicate whether an AP is indoors or outdoors.
The older wireless package includes a useful country info function.
There everyone could see for themselves whether the rules correspond with local rules.
I hope that this function will also be added to the wifi package in the future.
The double quotes around country name are realky only necessary if country name is more than one word (e.g. “United States”). Beware that country name is case sensitive, “Germany” is fine, “germany” is not (in legacy wireless it’s the other way around). number refers to wifi interface, in most cases it can be set to 0, the info displayed is the same regardless the band it supports.
There’s a glitch: if one enters e.g. /interface/wifi/radio/reg-info country= and then presses a TAB key, list of countries is shown … but only countries with single-word names.

Hidden hidden, a lot of information and commands are hidden here.
Well one step more is /interface/wifi/radio/reg-info country=a and then hit TAB key. (Hoped it was * or ? or any other regexp value, but no, TAB key after “a” gives more than"b")
[admin@MikroTik] /interface/wifi/radio> reg-info country=a
"Aland Islands "New Zealand "United States Minor Outlying Islands Bulgaria Guyana Malta Qatar
"American Samoa "Norfolk Island "Viet Nam Cambodia Haiti Martinique Romania
"Antigua and Barbuda "North Macedonia "Virgin Islands Cameroon Honduras Mauritania Russia
"Bosnia and Herzegovina "Northern Mariana Islands "Wallis and Futuna Canada Hungary Mauritius Rwanda
But full list is also in WinBox pull-down list for Country. And in WebFig
It seems like you don’t have to … at least I didn’t and AP happily operates on 5180 with decent power. But I may be missing something (don’t fix it if it ain’t broken).
5170-5250 and 5250-5330 should not be used outdoors, only indoors.
There’s a reason you need to set a country.
If, in addition to the country setting, you also have to configure that certain frequencies may not be used, what is the point of a country setting?
I often give capsman a list of frequencies that may be used.
With a simple installation, the APs can easily choose a frequency themselves.
But if you have an outdoor AP, you will have to make a separate configuration for it because some frequencies are not allowed.
You must then separately link that configuration to the correct APs.
I would really like it if you could also indicate on the AP itself that it has been placed outdoors.
So basically a country and indoor/outdoor setting on the AP itself takes priority over the central CAPSMAN configuration.
The new wifi driver doesn’t seem to allow setting indoor/outdoor/any , similar to property installation of legacy wireless driver. We can only guess what this means for radio setup then.
Ah , now I understand the sticker on my brand new hAP ax2 … “use indoor only”.
I wondered if it was about IPX waterproof rating. Was it?
Maybe , but as the wifi(wave2) driver has no more parameter for “Installation”/“outdoor/indoor/any” … that setting is built in in the device , I assume it is.
We already had devices with installation fixed as “outdoor” … Omnitik 5 ac, SXTsq 5 ac, … . The installation value can not be changed, ‘indoor only’ frequencies cannot be set.
Installation as “Outdoor only” makes sense. Prohibit the use of forbidden frequencies. Some frequencies are only allowed if used indoor. (Close door and windows ?)
(The “Distance=indoors” in the advanced wlan driver setting is about something else.)
Now that hAP ax2 seems to be set/fixed as installation=indoor.
No panic. “outdoor” is limiting, normally “indoor” is not. It’s all about not disturbing radars, weather radars, and emergency services, and other priority users of those channels.
Indoor transmissions create less interference as the radiation is limited by the walls.
This “indoor setting” can be seen in the comments of the default configuration of the hAP ax2.

Some devices are indeed really for indoor or outdoor use.
But where do you place a wAP ac?
It is a weatherproof AP, but a stand is included in the package if you want to place it on your desk.
I did a quick check on a wAP ac LTE kit:
default-configuration:
#| installation: outdoor;
But it runs happily on 5180, which is not allowed outdoors.
wAP ac “installation” can be set to “any”. At least with ROS 6.45.6 (the ROS version that performs rock solid).
RouterBOARD wAP G-5HacT2HnD
Should check the ARM based wAP ac, and newer ROS, but expect it to still be the same. (Installation option is still in WLAN driver , even with ROS 7.12)
Yes , with the legacy Wireless package , there was much more manual control, for the low level operation.
With the Wifi package, quite some of these parameter settings are supposed to be automatic. There are new ones to try to master.
So indoor/outdoor (or even all) for installation in Wireless package is available as parameter, not found so far in the Wifi package.
(In wireless, for outdoor only devices , only outdoor can be choosen as installation, to prevent the use of some outdoor-forbidden frequencies, which are country/region dependent..)
The Wap ac (RouterBOARD wAP G-5HacT2HnD) with Mipsbe processor, cannot run wifi(wave2)
