Playing with RM500U-CN

Hi,

I saw Quectel added MBIM support for RM500U-CN from firmware RM500UCNAAR03A05M2G_01.001.01.001 so I decided to setup up as a backup connection.
With this firmware the USB device show up okay

The interesting part starting when I check the LTE interface, on the network mode show up as custom not 5g and can’t select the bands and the model is not show up correctly but I guess for that box just picking up a different hardware info

LTE connection working fine but no info which band it’s used

Also I can go with data class custom not sure what in the background in here 5g or CA for 4g

Sadly AT chat support missing for this modem so can’t really see what’s happening but I can get a resonable speed

I noticed for the last few RouterOS updates they adding more and more Quectel modem support hoping this will be added as well at least for the AT chat support. This modem is for China market but now Europen countries turning off the 3g network and use those frequencies for 4g this modem can actually work out really well in Europe even with it’s limited band support.

was really suprised to hear a new firmware for RM500U-CN is available, because i thought this modem is EOL and i said goodbye to it…

where did you get the mentioned firmware RM500UCNAAR03A05M2G_01.001.01.001 from?

played with the modem on a openwrt (rooter), as you said the modem is a cheap backup with limited band support, but was difficult to get it run without mbim

love to hear about the new firmware

I got it on the Quectel forum was released on 2023-12-07 I know it’s hard to get firmware update from them. If you want I can upload the firmware for you somewhere.
I remember saw the post on the forum sayig the RM500UCNAA end of life I have the AB one but the firmware what I got is AA and updated fine. I wish I understand their naming convention…

I’m pretty sure he si talking about the Quectel forum https://forums.quectel.com/ It’s not consistent how they give out the firmware updates. When I first asked the firmware they not responded back on the forum for weeks and I sent direct message as well and on the same they 1 on of them sent me the firmware and another person rejected. So…

sorry, with forum - as pidro’s guess - i meant the quectel forum, there my requests (posts or queries by direct message) were ignored regarding that modem
