PPPoA DSL Modems and Transparent Bridging

I am not new to Mikrotik but this is the first time I have needed to ask the community for help.

I have been using an off the shelf Linksys RV042 to load balance 2 DSL modems in transparent bridging mode, then using that Linksys box as the gateway for my Mikrotik.

Now I have expanded the DSL lines from 2 to 4 and would like to ditch the RV042 boxes completely.

I am not stuck on the load balancing part, I get that.

My question is: Can I configure the Mikrotik to connect via Transparent Bridging to 4 DSL modems without 4 NICs (one for each modem)?

I am running v2.9.50 on a Dell Optiplex 320 with 3 available NICs, 3.2GHz Intel Pentium 4 512MB RAM.

Yes, use a vlan switch and put each of the four ports into a seperate vlan access port. Then on the port to the Mikrotik have it set to a trunk port and then create vlan interfaces on the Mikrotik, have these set to DHCP.

I can highly reccomend Thomson SpeedTouch 546v6 modems for doing this, they are very stable and can do not only PPPOA half bridge, but PPPOE half bridge as well as full PPPOE Bridge.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I tried your suggestion I wanted to let you know it worked perfectly - the FIRST TIME!

Now I need to go back and fix load balancing while also using the Web proxy feature.

If you ever are in Phoenix, AZ and are thirsty for a beer there is one waiting.

Ha ha, no worries mate.

I’m down in New Zealand, but do a lot of consulting which is meaning I am traveling to more and more industry shows around the world. Hopefully I get to go to one in Phoenix so I can take you up on that offer.

I’m always keen to visit ISP’s of any type to see what they are doing, the most creative uses of technology often come out of the smallest ISP’s I have found, so it’s always very interesting to go visit them.

nz_monkey,

Want to go for two beers?

I got all the DSL modems configured on the switch now I am having a huge problem trying to get load balancing working. I installed the new beta 3.4 and now the Web Proxy doesn’t work either! (I can go without proxy for a while if I get the DSL lines pumping)

How are using your DSL lines?

All but 1 of mine are DHCP configured, so doing the normal load balance how-to’s don’t seem to work.

Any ideas? (screw two beers - a whole case of beer coming for you if you do)

Thanks buddy!

Hrmm, OK. What brand and model DSL modems are they ?

They are Actiontec modems.

They work as far as I am concerned. I just wanted to know how you are using the connection they provide.

I am trying to build a big pipe out of 4 of these pppoe connections to serve a campus network.

Getting them all to act as one gateway is giving me problems.

I just was wondering if you were doing the same thing, and if so, how it worked for you.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers.

Bill

So far, the 3.4 software using ECMP and routing using multiple interfaces works but will break the hotspot server. :frowning:

Hi, yes I understand what you are trying to do and have this working. Basically they need to support DHCP spoofing, this will put the PUBLIC ip onto the vlan interface of the Mikrotik box.
You will then need to set 4 default gateways and use ECMP

So do you find that the ECMP implementation is fast?

In fact these Actiontec will put the public IP on the VLAN interface like you say, and I did get it working on ver 3.4 however the hotspot and webproxy both broke when I upgraded to 3.4. The traffic was going through the MT but it seemed kinda slow.

Can 2.9.5 do ECMP?? I could not figure that one out.

Thanks man.
