I’m running a MT with a bunch of wireless clients connecting via PPPoe, I am wondering if under the pppoe profile I should turn on compression and encryption/require encryption?
Would it slow down the connections due to the encryption element?
Would this form of encryption even work or is it another WEP waste of time?
How much extra load would it put on the MT?
any help or experience anyone has had would be appreciated.
I generally turn on compression and encryption. NEVER turn on “require encryption” unless you know that ALL clients that connect to the server will support it (MOST do NOT support encryption). Many do not support compression either, but turning these options on will (at least) possibly get you one or the other for SOME clients.

I see no difference at all with these options turned on. The fact is, MOST clients (at least the ones I use) do NOT support either. One notable exception is the Windows XP client (probably other MS clients, too). You will get encrypted connections IF you have MSCHAP turned on (most of the time), unless this option is not turned on by the client (I think it will be on by default). I’m not aware of any broadband routers that have a client that supports either encryption OR compression.
