It is not likely that your ISP will have given you a mac address. A mac address is a unique and fixed identifier of certain equipment inside the wireless equipment you bought or were given and which is necessary for the proper working of the system. They should not be used, altered or interfered with unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Your ISP will have given you an account name and a password which the system uses to connect you to the wireless network. If you use these and get a connection they are correct, and the fact that the connection you get then doesn’t work well is either a result of the system settings being set incorrectly by the isp or, as you say, poor signal strength either because you don’t have a good line-of-sight to the other end of the radio link or the antenna is pointed wrongly.

Most ISPs don’t allow their customers to access the wireless gear directly because if you don’t know what you’re doing you can cause problems both to it and to the whole network.

So in the first instance you should take these problems up with your ISP, as I assume you are paying them for the service you’re not getting from them.
