just one quick question for the experienced ones. I’m going to contract 1 Gbit/s with a tier one provider and also I will create 2 AS. Then schema is:
<1 gbit/s provider > – ethA — router --±ethB-- AS #1
|
±ethC-- AS #2
I’m using right now RB1100 in several towns moving up to 100 Mbit/s with firewalls, queues, pppoe, etc.. and I’m very happy. When I suggested to use RB1100 or RB1100 ah x2, etc.. they told me not to use a toy router…
Is anybody using mikrotiks for something similar? that router will only perform this routing with bgp and maybe some firewall rules. If this is not enough powerful; any recommendation?

We´re pushing ~400Mbit/s BGP through a RB1100AH with 50% max load;
But without conntrack and therefore without firewalling - generally this costs a lot of resources…
I´m guessing it should work flawlessly with RB1100AH X2;
To be 100% safe you could go for a AS1000 Series (sorry Mikrotik) or wait for the CCR1036.

There are many x86 solutions, that would satisfy your demand. You can have ROS features not only on MTik hardware.

Regarding a x86 solution → Do you know any working set? I need a proved working solution and I have no time to play with different HW (mainboards, memory, network cards, etc..). Really will it route up to 1 Gbit/s?. Also the housing of a x86 is much expensive than a router due to power consumption; so in the long term it may be expensive.
Regarding mikrotik ccr1036 → This is still not available and as usual on new hw/sw, when available it will have lot of bugs/problems until stabilized.
Regarding as10000 → is this a new kind of ciscos? (I’m not familiar with cisco hw) Older cisco like 3600 or 7200 can do the work?
I’m very familiar with rb1100 and very happy with them. I’m using as router/firewall/pppoe concentrator/queues, etc.. in several towns, up to ~400 customers each and its load is ~40-50%. I’ll not need connection tracking in the router doing bgp; just some input/output filters which doesn’t need conntrack.

I am using a Roc Box Core router from roc-noc.com
It’s a 1-U x86 router running RouterOS
It is handling our 1Gig link.

There are many pre-made x86 solutions. I didn’t try any of them so cannot tell from my experience, but I do not see any reasons it might work bad. Check www.mikrotik.com/mfm if you’re having diffuculty finding any.
As for 1Gb link, that’s nothing a decent x86 wouldn’t handle..
If you tried to build x86 solutio, the most importatnt thing to remember is to use a good lan card, preferable intel based chipset, it would help you goes to high traffic.
But if you are looking for 1G connection, i don’t think you will find any, because the best lan card would only be able to push up to 950mb/s
