RB260GS / CSS106-5G-1S – Lost SwOS management access after VLAN configuration

Hello all.

I'm kind of a newbie regarding network and mikrotik products, so I need you help.

After upgrading the switch RB260GS / CSS106-5G-1S to SwOS 2.19, I confirmed that the web interface remained accessible after a power cycle.

I then changed the VLAN settings, setting Port 1 to VLAN Mode enabled, VLAN Receive only untagged, and Default VLAN ID 1. After clicking Apply All, I immediately lost access to the management interface.

The switch no longer responds to ping at 192.168.88.1. However, my Mac can still learn the switch's MAC address through ARP.

I have tried the physical reset procedure twice, but access has not been restored. I also tested a direct Ethernet connection from my Mac to Ports 1 and 2, using a static IP address.

Could you please advise on the correct recovery procedure for this device? I would particularly appreciate guidance on restoring the SwOS configuration without risking further damage to the firmware.

Thank you.

Regards.

It depends how the access to MGMT is being configured/restricted. But I really would expect that physical procedure for RESET should work as it should force the device to factory settings where access is enabled from all interfaces...

SwOS manual

Hi. The thing is that it worked on the first attempt, but not afterwards. That the strange part, and now I'm afraid that I might damage something while continue to do it. Not sure if this could be the case, but for sure continuous resets won't do any good to the device (I think).

A reset more or less doesn't harm the device.

After reset it should be factory-default. So I would try to first double-check the reset procedure and then double check another source of possible fault in communication that could prevent mgmt access. After reset, it should advertise itself via MNDP, so it shall be visible in WinBox also...

Just might cause some harm to the firmware (?)... But is strange that after have done the reset that worked, now it does not any more. Something is not right, I guess. I will try to do a reset again... Maybe this time it will work. But if doesn't, have no idea what other approach to take, since I do not have any other way to access the device.

@PsychoMind
There are TWO possible things you may do to attempt recovering that device:

  1. reset it
    OR:
  2. reset it
choose the one you prefer

These don't seem to agree on what you did. First post said it worked after upgrade. Then you modified config and locked youself out.

I don't see where you reset it and it worked.

Please see these and see if you can explain what really happened better. Because resetting it should fix the problem to allow you to reconnect to 192.168.88.1 (as long as you disconnect from any network that already has that address).

How? A reset does not reflash anything . . . it just wipes the config.

And are you connecting directly after reset, or ???

You're right, now I notice that I missed one part in my explanation... I had one issue and done a reset that worked fine. Afterwards with the changes done I was locked out (no access to the conf page) and try the reset again, but this time no luck with the reset, the point were I'm at the moment.

Yes, connecting directly

Yep, but generally speaking on some devices the timing may be tricky, since if you keep the button pressed too shortly it doesn't reset, and if you keep it pressed too long it may enter a different state.
On a switch like the RB260GS pressing it for too long may put it in BOOTP/TFTP mode, and there are reports of the device entering "half functional states" where only one or two ports work and others don't.
So you should try again.

One thing that I notice is that after done a reset, the light on the port that I connect the pc directly is always flashing, don't remember previously that this was the behaviour.

Just to be sure, what sequence did you follow to reset ?

What I found:
Start from power down
Press reset, then power up (can be tricky)
After no more then 5s you should release reset.

And as indicated, you may have to try a couple of times and play a bit with the timings.

I've tried different timings clicking the reset button just in case... Don't know if was that but I'm now able to reconnect. But after my last reset I was able to ping the page and reach the router, so it seems that it was ok, but not loading the page. I've done just a restart, no further reset and I was back again to the page. Now back to the settings, hope not to mess up this again. Thank you all for the support.
