I recently bought a MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN. Everything seems to be working properly. Now I want to try resetting the entire device. So that the device behaves as if it came from the factory.
However, it doesn’t work at all.
I couldn’t find it on the MikroTik website. So I found this video.
I follow the video exactly. However, when I connect it again via WinBox, the MikroTik still has the previous configuration.
If I run winbox
System - reset configuration
it works correctly.
However, I need to test the HW reset option in case of forgotten password etc.
In my (limited) experience it works. It can be finicky, but it does. Things to watch out for:
Press and hold the reset button without releasing it while powering up. This can be difficult while plugging the device in - feeling the correct pressure on the button, etc. Because of the recessed button some sort of tool is recommended, People have wound up tearing the button off of the PCB, so be gentle
After powering up, some 5 or so seconds later the LED (on the rb5009 designated as USR) will flash on and off once a second. It does this for approx. 5s. Release the button during this flashing stage.
The device will reset the configuration and reboot on its own.
EDIT: Btw if you want a totally repeatable configuration while uploading a specific version of your choice, I’d look into netinstall. In this process an optional setup script can also be uploaded at the same time.
