Resetting an RB951G-2HnD - tried all tricks...

I did some bad config change (setting bridge-local mac interface to something invalid), and now my router is no where to be detected.

I have tried:

  • Resetting it with holding the reset button in, and insering power, wait for light to flash and release
  • Accessing it trough winbox and via its mac-adress (mac-telnet).
  • Connecting it to another mikrotik router and doing a mac-scan to look for it.
  • Booting it with holding the reset button, waiting for ACT-light to turn off, the release, and having netinstall ready with pxe.

None of which work…

I do have a cisco serial console cable (those flat blue ones), but I’m not sure if any of the ethernet ports will be connectable trought that. I am still looking for a pc that have serial connection before I am able to try.

Is there any other tricks? Does the RB951G even support serial console connection (I cant find any docs on it..). Or is it totally bricked now?

It doesn’t have serial ports, so that method will not work.

How do you know that it is not reset? What is the problem exactly? Be aware, that a reset router has firewall on port 1, so connect from port 2-5.

I am trying to connect on port 2-5 but its still a no-go. I cant even see it when winbox scans for devies, nor the other mikrotik router scanning for mac-telnet nodes. It wont give out any dhcp, and there is no “MikroTik” wlan popping up on the list of available wlans.

I’ve also tried to do a netinstall on it, but I am unable to get it to boot on my netinstall network via pxe.

  1. Sat my pc to a dummy 10.0.0.1/24 net.
  2. Started netinstall and enabled netboot and wrote in 10.0.0.2
  3. Connected the router directly to my computer via ethernet
  4. Hold the reset button in until the light stopped blinking (± 30 seconds).
  5. Waited 10 minutes +
  6. Nothing happened…

What can I do with it now?

Anyone? Or am I stuck with a bricked rb951g? :frowning:

bump..

Please?!

I know this sounds silly because you have answered just about every RouterOS support question on this site, but is that always true? The only reason I ask is that I recently had to recover a RB750GL and I also thought “well surely it will run off ports 2-5”, but it only worked when I was using port 1 for netinstall and PXE. Does the netinstall check ports 2-5 as well when you hold the reset button in?

xeor, it took me quite a long time to get it to work (was trying ports 2-5 and Windows :sunglasses:, eventually I got their recovery app to work when I had my router connected to port 1 and was using Windows XP. I don’t know if Windows 8 would have worked with port 1, since I only went to trying port 1 after I had enough and moved to a Windows XP computer. I was struggling to get past the whole “Bad client IP” messages with one machine I have with Windows 8 (or whatever the message is when you turn on PXE and type in a client IP in the recovery app and Windows doesn’t feel like it has an active connection, even with a statically assigned IP).

Netinstall ONLY works on Ether1
Connecting with Winbox with default config only works with Ether2-5. This is because default config puts firewall on Ether1.

I’m stuck in the same problem.

When it goes into netinstall mode, the ACT led is ON and after a couple of minutes just reboots.

After each reboot, the router sounds like a cricket, than just one beep.

OK, mine just came back to life :sunglasses:

I’ve used another power supply and the netinstall just came ON and I’ve managed to install another version. :open_mouth:

I have about 50 RB951Ui-2HnD units that I have decided to put back into service. I didn’t remember the passwords on them so I reset the configuration. Everything appears to have reset but it failed to reset the passwords. PLEASE HELP!
