ROSE and the "Files" menu

Hi there,

Got the RDS2216, it works well, but why in the world does the “Files” menu show every single file on the storage side of the house, as in every single file in every single sub-directory, instead of showing only the content of the current directory, and allow the user to browse directories? Once you start using it and you have tens of thousands of files on the router, it renders the Files menu essentially useless, and it creates lag and issues with your browser. And if you create a backup config from the Files menu, only way to find it is to sort files by “Last modified” date.

I get the fact that before ROSE, RouterOS was not a fileserver per se, but now that you’re in the storage/NAS business, why can’t you adopt the same logic as every single OS out there, i.e. only show the content of the current directory, and allow the user to browse sub-directories? It would make the Files menu a lot more user-friendly.

Would love to hear other ppl’s opinion on this.

RouterOS originally did not have a fully featured file browser or even directory support, but this is now changing with all kinds of improvements being made every release. 7.20 will already have a much faster and more familiar Files menu

Good to know. We will all have to be patient I guess.

Good timing, glad to hear things are going to improve. I’m using the Files menu with a USB drive for various scripts, and quickly ran into the same challenges with thousands of files. The upcoming improvements should benefit even non-ROSE users.
