Routerboard USB sharing or webcam support

It is possible to share USB port on RB over TCP/IP? Someting like RS232 over TCP/IP function?

It is possible to connect USB webcam to RB USB port and stream video over network?

Thanks.

We use USB over IP regularly with VMWare ESX and KVM, it works great and allows us to get around share restrictions in ShadowProtect as well as to connect devices such as webcams and copy protection dongles to the VM.

The most mature, but commercial client/server is:

There is now an open source project underway and it looks like they have made significant progress:

I agree it would be good to see USB over IP support in RouterOS, im actually surprised it’s not already there.

I got several hd usb webcam I need them in a spot far away, I think we can try using the some routerboard to stream video.
You must install linux, and dont know if the cpu would be enough for that task.
I wonder how can I test that, without doing all the work.
How the router board cpu compares to a intel one e2xxx how can I measure that.

+1
USB over TCP/IP is the useful feature, request

I think this would be better handled by a Raspberry Pi. The Pi is cheap and the hardware is more suited to providing web cam features with a USB camera. Although the RBs have better power supplies than the Pi.

Oh yes. Raspberry Pi used to freeze when i used a USB CAM that i was testing as a surveillance camera
after i bought a USB powered HUB and connected through it. It is working now.
By the way yes i was also trying to create some sort of SMB Share in RB951Ui-2HnD so that i can share/watch videos over LAN stored in the USB HDD, But i guess USB HDD can only be used for web caching.

Does not mention anything about SMB Share in Mikrotik RB’s

sorry, I dig into too old (2010) post.
I get this when i was searching for USB HDD SMB share in Mikrotik RoS.
Have any body done it ??

just found it inside
IP->SMB

I guess it should help me share my video on USB Harddrive over LAN

It says Invalid, :frowning:. Does the file system format needs to be ext2,3. i guess NTFS, FAT32 aren’t supported)

It was really a nice experience…
after Mikrotik start formatting my USB drive. I disconnected the drive after 10 secs but the format process has started so i’m unable to get the disk mounted with file system, it’s unallocated now.
Final Conclusion. USB in Mikrotik only for 3g dongles & web proxy.
I was thinking to clean my disk though which was done by Mikrotik. Many Thanks.
(i have a backup so i’m LOL)

Seems like http://gregsowell.com/?p=3485
worked for me..
Thanks greg

You can share USB over IP network with the following software http://www.eltima.com/remote-usb.html
