Slight overloading connection causes errors on Miktorik

I’m having problems with my network:
copying from one PC to another is slow, sluggish, in best case around 100mbit and the worst thing is that the connection crashes.
Here’s my setup:
cable modem from Thomson (router set in bridge mode) - connected into eth1 port
router RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN
4 gigabit LAN capable PCs (connected to eth2 to 5 ports)
CAT 5e LAN cables

when I burden my connection in a way that i copy data from, lets say, PC #1 to PC #2 and try to browse the web on PC #2, i get this error:

may/25/2015 07:07:37 dhcp,critical,error dhcp-client on ether1 lost IP address 94.xxx.xxx.xxx - received NAK from dhcp server 10.255.2.10
that’s when connection to the internet and copying of file breaks

any idea why my router:

  1. drops the connections
  2. doesn’t give me full 1gbit connection from one PC to another?

Can you check in Switch > double click on switch1 that “switch all ports” is unticked?

Seeing all the log will help also (cannot see minutes in the screenshot), just open a terminal and type /log print then paste it here.

This is rather odd, looks like something is driving switch chip 1 nuts looks like its resetting itself?

Can you do a test and post just the log of what happened during that test?

Is there anything plugged on any of the remaining ethernet ports?

Can you check your board firmware? (System > Routerboard).

Looks like the whole switch chip is resetting, don’t know if this reset is induced or its defective, what were you plugging on ether5? Have you tried with different cables?

I’d save an export, then do a reset-configuration with NO defaults, then reload the export and test.

To save an export:

ether5 is NAS PC with nas4free OS. It is based on 1st gen Atom cpu and has 1gbit PCI LAN card upgrade. It has 100mbit onboard LAN but I upgraded it just to get 1gbit

the thing that i find odd is why my PC which is on ether2 gets only 10M speed? It has 1gbit onboard Realtek chip (Intel P35 chipset).

well that is not possible cause i have under wall cables (CAT5e) which lead to each room and PCs are connected to those cables thru wall socket via separate cable. All those cables lead to central point where Mikrotik router is. Only directly connected devices are cable modem connected to eth1 and NAS PC connected to eth5
I was thinking of upgrading under wall cables to CAT6 or 7 but that costs me a lot and there’s no guarantee that it will perform better cause i have cat5e (so gigabit speeds should work). as I’ve mentioned, the copy speed goes up to 11.000kbytes (so it’s about 90 mbits) and I really don’t know why is doesn’t go to 1000mbits…

Problem is that I’m noob for routerOS and I’ve managed to set it up via youtube tutorial videos. I still have lots of problems like UPNP not working (cause of bad firewall setup which was explained to me in my previous topic on this forum but I really don’t know how to fix that up even I have brief instructions how to do it. I’m just that noob…)
I would really appreciate if someone could read my explanation of network setup and then lead me step by step thru every part of ROS setup to get everything working… :frowning:

You need to stabilize your setup first as it looks like its malfunctioning…

It could be the switch chip is damaged, but maybe bad cabling or a bad network card can be causing this issue also.

Doing the reset as per the instruction I posted will leave your router exactly as it was prior to the reset and is something we need to rule out.

By using different cables I wasn’t referring to different standard, cat5e is absolutely fine for gigabit as long as they’re correctly installed.

As you cannot check this, your best bet would be doing a test yourself with equipment you can place near the router for the test, using patch cables directly from the NAS, PC, laptop, etc to see if the problem persists.

I’ve found the problem: it’s the NAS PC. Copying from it causes this problem!
I’ve reset configuration to default and loaded export file again. Everything works as it was. I’ve tested (with simple queue turned on) and same thing happens, heres the log:

so I’ve tried copy test with another PC (eth3) to my PC (eth2) and everything works fine, no log values whatsoever. But copy speed was also around 100mbit which is problem cause both PCs have gigabit ethernet chips. Any help with forcing the connection to go gigabit?

about NAS PC, i remember having problems when it had win 7 on it. I use it mainly as torrent box and even slight overload cause it to loose connection. I tough it was due router cause of errors but now i can see that it somehow overloads the connection. funny thing is that i remember it happens same on its upgraded PCI gigabit lan cars as it was happening with onboard 100mbit one. any advice why?

Try this:

1.- shutdown the router
2.- unplug ALL ethernet ports
3.- power on the router
4.- plug your modem, wait 1 minute
5.- plug your PC wait another minute
6.- plug second PC wait a minute
7.- Do a copy between PCs

after steps 5 and 6 look at the log for the link up event, check what ethernet port speed gets negotiated. If it isn’t gigabit, unplug and try another port, and note if this time autonegotiation works.

If it doesn’t negotiate gigabit speed on any gigabit ports, try a different cable, does it negotiate gigabit now?

then post the log.

What I am trying to check is if any of the ports are faulty, or any of your ethernet cards, or is the whole switch chip (I’m afraid).

I have had very bad experiences on atom platform in terms of networking. You can plug a gigabit NIC, but don’t expect gigabit speeds, not due to the NIC but to the motherboard chipset.

it almost worked perfectly:
I’ve disconnected all the lan ports on the router, forced it shut down by unplugging the power and repluged power in and then started to connect all PCs which were booted into OS with cables disconnected.
First I’ve connected cable modem, then eth 2PC, then other PC on eth3 and then tested their connection by copying 9gb file. It all went well and copy speed was around 33.000kbytes (cca 265 mbit). I’ve also stress tested it by opening 3 youtube 1080p videos to stream on the same time on eth2 PC and everything went well, there weren’t even speed decrease, it kept around 33k. then I’ve connected one more PC and last is NAS (eth5). Then I’ve tested copy from NAS to eth2 PC. It went well without any errors and speed was also around 33.000kybtes. After that copy I’ve tested same copy from NAS with streaming on my eth2 PC. It went ok but connection started to drop.

this dropping and reconnecting of NAS pc goes on and on in this regular timings (i haven’t pasted it all cause it repeats every few minutes). Also there’s a problem with connecting to the NASs web interface. I can connect to its shared folders and I can connect to its torrent web interface but i can’t connect to the main web interface. I ger error 403 - forbidden…

so all in all, looks like NAS PC is the problem. Also do you thing if i change utp cables to lets say FTP 6a, would it improve copy performance?

I doubt cables would enhance the situation. Look at the ethernet RX/TX stats for any errors.

So it seems is the NAS PC screwing things up… maybe its even injecting current or something into the data wires and that’s what makes the switch chip go crazy…

Regarding transfer speeds to reach gigabit speeds powerful PCs are needed. did you try with the simple queue disabled?

I had a problem a long time ago that once I connected a specific system to a switch everything else stopped working. I think it turned out to be a ground loop at the site. We moved the “bad” device (and all its peripherals) to the same powerbar as a working system and the problems disappeared.

Try plugging in your NAS PC into the same power bar as one of your other systems

well, as you mentioned it, I do have strange problems with some kind of current outburst on hardware devices but on other forums people said that it’s normal? for example, I have situation where LCD TV and PC are both connected on same power surge and when I connect hdmi cable from TV to PC, touching PC case with metal part of hdmi cable causes sparking. I’ve measured about 30V AC. Simmilar thing happens when I’ve measured 8V AC from wall USB charger, from it’s metal part on micro-usb head btw. ground on the same socket… so AC current is outbursting btw devices. Because I have fid switch of 0,5A which doesn’t jum out, people said that ground wasn’t the problem… I dunno what to thing, its way out of my league of knowledge

well the first two PCs that I’ve tester should be good enough: one is i3 with 4gb ram and other is Xeon E5410 with 4gb ram and the speed was cca 33.000kbytes…

I suspected that!!!

Seems your install has AC current leakage, I’d be more than careful with that. Apart from devices being damaged and malfunctioning it can lead to injuries.

I have fixed a couple situations like yours, all I did was to unplug everything from wall sockets, then start plugging and testing until I found the device leaking AC and fixed or ditched it. Most times the culprit is on PCs PSUs or case assemblies.

If you cannot isolate the leaking device, I’d look for an electrician to check your electric installation.

Those PCs should be able to pass more than 260mbps, though truth to be told, Windows isn’t the most efficient when copying files through a LAN; you can either use iperf jperf or any GUI to them for more precise testing, or even Mikrotik bandwidth test tool to test TCP/UDP performance.

You’re free to install Cat6 but most inexpensive ones are a PITA to install, and break easily, I’d install a good quality 5e cable (Tyco Electronics/AMP) better than a inexpensive CAT6.

I can see you’re using the switch chip for lan-to-lan, and not the router’s CPU.

It should be able to pass gigabit speeds through it easily. I get over 900 Mbit/s when I use old-school FileZilla FTP between Windows machines and use that a reference. The highest throughput I’ve gotten was 600/700 duplex when copying between 2 pairs of hard drives. Other servers are frequently much slower. WinXP SMB gets about 500 Mbit/s in the same conditions; Lighttpd (Windows version) gets 200 Mbit/s.

Verify that superfluous security software installed on your computers isn’t lowering the throughput. Also see general Windows TCP tweaking advice from SpeedGuide.

My Teldor Category 5E cables were installed in 2005 which is also nearly 10 years ago.
