The size of two RB5009s one on top of the other, designed to fit in the K-79 bracket in place of two RB5009s
I currently use a TP-Link TL-SG2016P, but would like something that can do the same things (except the switch’s L3 features which I don’t use) while being able to be mounted in the K-79 bracket alongside the RB5009 and connected to the RB5009 via 10G SFP+ and still having a free SFP+ for later chaining to another switch.
Do you think Mikrotik will make something like this in the future? Do you think it should be different somehow? How much do you think it could cost? Could the price be similar to the TL-SG2016P?
The problem with this is that RB5009s only have a single 10G SFP+ port so I can’t chain 3 of them using 10G links, and also the TL-SG2016P that I currently have costs about the same as a single non-PoE RB5009.
Also, the recommended price for CSS326 is $159 while for CRS326 it’s $209, so I assume a K-79 mountable SwOS device would also be cheaper than a RouterOS device.
I like your idea, but I would prefer 4x SFP+ or 2x SFP+ & 2x 10G RJ45 and 8x 2.5 Gbit/s RJ45 Ports (incl. 4 of them with POE+). USB not needed. I would prefer RouterOS but the form factor mentioned by you.
Reason for the 2 additional 10G ports is an Link to an additional 10G Switch, NAS or ESXi server.
Actually I’m using a CRS309 and a passiv Mokerlink 2.5Gbit switch with 10G SFP+ port.
Maybe they could make it as they make CSS326 and CRS326 - a RouterOS version and a cheaper SwOS version on the same hardware, for when L3 functionality is not needed. As for Ethernet ports, I thought that if they were all gigabit (on the cheapest most basic model of the switch), it would be both cheap and useful enough expansion to the RB5009 for a lot of people to be willing to buy it. They could also introduce models with 2.5G or 10G Ethernet ports for those who need them.
