Hello everyone. I want to share my observations.
Recently, I have been feeling a certain stagnation of the Mikrotik company. This applies to both the release of RouterOS and equipment, as well as the latest news on their website. I decided to check the mentions of Mikrotik in Google Trends. So it is, to date, the mention of Mikrotik is the lowest since 2011. It seems that Mikrotik has problems.
While I can agree somewhat on the software side between 2010 and 2019, since then Mikrotik have been putting a LOT of effort into RouterOS v7
On the hardware side they have had steady releases of products the whole way through. They have recently released the CCR2004-16G-2S+, RB5009UG+S+IN, Knot, nRay and Chateau 5G.
Also, are you aware that there is a global chip shortage?
Google Trends shows what people ask the Google Search for.
If queries for Afghanistan during last week are way bigger than 1 month ago it is not the same to: “Is Afghanistan popular”.
Mikrotik sure has lost a lot of the wireless and “prosumer” business to Ubiquiti, but Mikrotik still has some serious hold in the areas where the other option is Cisco, Juniper, Huawei and so on, with a completely different price-tag and yearly support agreements.
I hope that RouterOS v7 will catch up with new technologies now when it has a much more updated kernel.
The irony is that my children are already growing up until ROS v7 sees the light. No matter how it turns out that the future generation will wait for it
Cisco IOS(XE/XR) and JunOS wasn’t built in a day either.
I think Mikrotik has to make up its mind about what features to prioritize. More routing? Better firewall? SDWAN? Only focus on performance? Use cases?
