Unable to logon to RB493 - timed out!

Hello GURUS!

Just today bought my first RB493 and seems that I can’t connect to it! I read this http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/RouterBOARD_Troubleshooting and this http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Netinstall.
Well yes, I can try with serial connection, but I don’t have it right now. I am trying connection with Winbox. I am using Windows 7 as main OS. For the Winbox I set to run as Administrator and compatability mode is set to Win XP SP3.
Winbox starts normally, on the main screen before “Connect” button I pressed “three dots” icon, which give me new window with MAC adress of my RB and ROS version.

Strange is that IP is set to 0.0.0.0. Using this record I can’t connect to RB, Winbox gives me the following message

Tried to change ports on RB - the same story, I can’t connect. Only difference is that I see new MAC address. Do you know what can be the problem? And is there any other method how to get access to RB without serial connection?
Thank you,
Dmitrijs

Disable all Network interface on the computer (except original Ethernet interface).
Direct Ethernet cable connection is preferred between RouterBOARD and computer.

Yes, I did this before. Winbox can see MAC address of RB - but it can’t login. I tried placing cable in each RB ports. Still the same.
So, I guess, only serial connection can help me with this?

You can also try to reset configuration http://wiki.mikrotik.com/images/1/14/Resethole.jpg

Tried this also. But I am not sure how to do it correctly. Should I place some metal object in this small round metal pad and then boot up or should I insert something like screw in the hole and then boot up? Did both, still can’t connect :frowning:

Yes, you can use something like screwdriver, ensure both sides of reset hole are connected. Also it is possible that Windows firewall is blocking your MAC address connection. Try to disable it.

OK.
Just did reset as you told. I put small screwdriver in the hole, booted up. Wait ~2 mins, then removed power and removed screwdriver.
Winbox up and running but I still can’t connect :frowning: I tried also on Win XP and then on Win 2000 Prof. machines. Firewall disabled.

Have you disabled all other Network interfaces on the computer?
It would be good idea to try another computer with Winbox to access the router.

Yes, I disabled unused interfaces in my PC. I left just one ethernet connection. RB is conneted to this interface via patch cable (factory made).
I tried other PCs already. I tried also on Win XP and then on Win 2000 Prof. machines. Firewall disabled.

I don’t know, but I guess that maybe the problem is in the board itself :frowning: Now, when i power it up, I don’t hear usual “beep” signal from buil-in speaker.

Find Null Modem cable and check the console output,

Perhaps you will need to reinstall the router,
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Netinstall

I suspect that Windows Vista/7 is causing your problem. Try to run Winbox as administrator (right click → run as administrator), also try to disable any firewall and antivirus in your Windows. You can try from another PC and see if the problem is in the router, or PC.

EDIT: if there is no beep, then you probably need to do what Sergejs said.

Hi. I tried everything mentioned in this thread and on WiKi page. Information you have is very usefull! Thank you for support!

Winbox tool I run as Administrator under Win 7. I also tried running Winbox under WinXP/Win2000/Win2003 with firewall/antivirus disabled - still unable to connect. All other network interfaces were disabled
Yesterday very late, when I got my null modem cable I tried to do serial connection. I am using putty and hypherterminal. Well, yes I got access to RB finally, but what I saw surpized me. I don’t remember exactly what was written, but was something similar to: “updating ELF…” or something like this…and nothing more. RB reboots itself after 5 or 7 minutes. Then I connected back again, tried to do initial setup - RB reboots again :frowning: Today, I gave RB back to local distributor. They also tried to do some manipulation via serial conenction, and they also faced with the problem. They took my RB for RMA. So, I guess there was some problem with bios/bootloader.
P.S. Did some one tried to connect using USB=>COM cable? I saw them planty on eBay. But I am not sure if they works.

yes, USB->Serial will work

Thank you!
