Upgrade ltAP mini from 6.49.19 to 7.20.7

I would like to upgrade my ltAP from 6.49.19 to 7.20.7 (because of UDP with OVPN) ... previously there was an intermediate step via 7.13.x (I did this some time ago with my backup ltAP) ... is this intermediate step no longer necessary? The package channel upgrade offers 7.20.7 directly.

br, Richard

IMHO this must be an error.

so i have to manually upgrade to which version before 7.20.7 ?

7.13.x, as far as I know.

mikrotik

says 7.12.2 … is the docu still correct ?

You need to update to 6.49.19, after that you can directly upgrade to the latest v7 version. Before that there were some issues that prevented the direct upgrade to the latest v7 version, that they got fixed in 6.49.19

Sorry, it was a typo … i am on 6.49.19

so i can go directly to 7.20.7, right ?

Actually, you may be correct. That intermediate step ( and yes, it's 7.12) is needed from ROS7 pre 7.12 to 7.13 or higher.

Moving from ROS6, it might indeed be possible it goes in one step.

Also, when it would fail and you can access it via another method than wireless (wifi), you can install the wireless package afterwards. The whole upgrade-via-7.13 thing was to auto-install the wireless package.

I have not tested this in a while. But AFAIK when using the upgrade channel, it installs the wireless package on the channel=upgrade. OP is suggesting it now saying 7.20.7. I'd give MikroTik enough credit they would not change the logic to install the wireless package. And on LtAP, there is no wifi-qc-*, so that's not an issue.

Now, I'd generate and save backup file and save export of config before. Perhaps also do a export hide-sensitive too so if problems you'd have you original config to post. Also, if this is your only internet source download the 7.20.7 packages before you upgrade. Worse case is you'd have to copy the wireless package to router and reboot to install it.

I’ve upgraded hundreds of mikrotiks in the winter pause from 6.49.19 to 7.20.6 without any issues.

I think the key is be at 6.49.19 to start. See

You can only get to 7.20.6 stable manually; only 7.20.7 is offered in the upgrade channel. I'll test it tomorrow and report back :wink:

Good luck. If you follow whatever the check-for-update path suggests - especially since it now offering long-term on V6 upgrade channel – my bet is you'll be fine. It's when folk go off the reservation where it can get messier, or have large CAPsMAN setup, or had complex config (like BGP) where V6 to V7 can go off the rails.

The one thing to also do is make sure you upgrade RouterBOOT (/system/routerboard), and if the LtAP has LTE also upgrade the LTE firmware once you get 7.20.7.

Just found, 6.49.19 has some very important changelog items:

What's new in 6.49.19 (2025-Jun-20 16:45):

*) system - fixed v6 to v7 upgrade from separate packages;
*) system - improved upgrade procedure reliability;
*) upgrade - the upgrade, testing, and development channels now direct to the latest stable version of RouterOS v7;

One point before i start the upgrade (test) :wink:

should i upgrade the lte R11e-LT6 modem (current V033) to V039 before upgrade to 7.20.7 , or does it not matter ? Sinde 6.49.19 there is a support for V039 (see changelog)

I don't think it matters. My only thought be if you upgrade now, you'd know LTE still work while at V6 still, if it's suggesting it.

My concern is rather whether 7.20.7 will recognise the modem with V033 ?

That why likely better to do it now. But, normally LTE still work with older firmware. And if it didn't, you'd typically just have the LTE not going to "running" but interface be there to upgrade.

But if it’s not running β†’ no internet β†’ no update ? Or am I thinking about this wrong?
