Could anybody please tell me how i can set user cap’s for each of my users using mikrotik. eg 500mb combined up/download cap.
If you want to apply traffic limit for both up+down, use ‘simple queue’ with ‘total-limit-at’ and ‘total-max-limit’.
sorry if i’m being slow but would’nt that limit the speed rather than the amount of data he would be allowed to up/download in say: 1 month
i’m still fairly new at Mikrotik & still finding my way trough the setup
thx
is their nobody that had this issue???
Look at this thread as well as look at the Hot Spot info in the manual:
http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/how-to-limit-a-user-to-a-given-amount-of-traffic/237/1
Yes, using HotSpot will be more easier to implement requested feature,
detailed information about HotSpot server,
http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.9/ip/hotspot
will my users still be able to Authenticate using PPOE if i use hotspot server?
No, if you are using PPPoE, set ‘limit-bytes-in’ and ‘limit-bytes-out’ in the ‘ppp secret’, in order to limit total amount of up/down traffic for the PPPoE user.
i tried that, but it seems to limit the amount of bytes comunicated from the client to mikrotik & not the amount of bytes that is actually used for internet usage. if the client disconnects & reconnects the “cap” is reset & he can use the service again until he reaches the limit again. i want to be able to limit a client to a certain amount of MB that he is allowed to use for internet p/m.
can usermanager be used to limit user internet usage if my users dial in via ppoe?
yes, it can. but don’t mix them up - hotpot is hotspot, and pppoe is pppoe. hotspot can’t authenticate pppoe users and vice versa. user manager is a control system, which authenticates different users, including those of pppoe, hotspot etc.
i’ve uploaded it to mikrotik but cant seem to get it to work with my current users. most probably i did not configure the userman correctly, but the wiki does not really help me as i need a more step by step setup. is their any other documentation to that could help me with the setup or anyone that has done this before that could help me please.
so you are saying that his huge pile of information doesn’t help?
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/User_Manager
I think you need to attend some trainings, there are trainings being often held in SA
hehe. may b the pile of info is to huge & i need to get this setup asap. i allready have mikrotik running with no problems, i would just like to have a capped service as well.
in other words, i am looking for an easy way & it seems that thats not possible- as always.
thx for u’r help.
your existing users will have to be removed, and added into the user manager. the pppoe server setup will stay as it is. just the users. then, it’s a matter of setting the speed limitations in user manager
if there is anybody in SA Cape Town Area that knows how to enforce user caps, please contact me on justin@justpcs.co.za.
will make it worth your while
last question normis. how would the users currently using pppoe authenticate on usermanager. surely their must be something i must change to get them to userman. i mean, if i remove them from the “secrets” in MT & add them into userman; would they automaticly connect trough userman after that?
you have to establish communication between User Manager and router.
- setup RADIUS client in the RouterOS.
- set appropriate settings to the User Manager (subscriber, router, user settings);
- set to the router to use RADIUS for PPPoE;
- disable ‘ppp secrets’ in RouterOS, as local user database is consulted firstly, then User Manager.
It should work, but you have to remember, that only PAP and CHAP authentication methods supported.
thx alot. i’ve done everything you said.and it works - well sort of
. the user connects but disconnects immediately thereafter.its most proberbly something small i’m missing.please reply if you know what could couse this.thanks again for the help
in the mikrotik log it says “terminating- could not determin local ip”
Make sure that clients are using only CHAP and PAP authentication methods.
Are you able to establish PPPoE tunnel, when local router database is used for clients AAA.
