vmware esxi hardware for routeros

Hi Guys,

I’ve has RB493AH and this died. I’ve replaced that with RB51U I’ve has for testing but time to time router becoming not responsive, so far I’ve detected small picks in “flash” and “firewall” usage and this happen when port scanning appear, at end point this result as temporary disconnect. This is really hard to identify what really happen because this happen 2-5 time daily, when I am trying to monitor this don’t happen anymore, obviously, CPU is going to 100% in this moment.

I’ve got tired of that and decided to install routeros on vmware I have here and that for have couple question about VM to be configured.

  1. VMWARE machine have only one network card. This one is connected to LAN, is there is some trick how to use same interface for WAN and LAN ? I am getting public IP from DHCP.

  2. VMWARE have good cpu i7-3770, I am planing to do some small reservation for router VM and to add very high priority some additional resources. Make sense to add more than one CPU in VM ? Sum resources will be smaller than one of 8 core, just asking how is optimized routerOS for 1 core and 2 core CPU ?

  3. which linux kernel to setup for latest routerOS (6.0x). 2.6 ?

  4. make sense to made 64-bit VM or should be 32-bit ?

for RouterOS - 32bit only.

If you cannot control other end, there is no way on how to set up your/lan/wan setup. If you could create VLAN and pass LAN through it, you could configure it that way.
