What should i expect as the max throughput in any one direction (since my traffic will be one user bursting mostly downstream). I want to put two RB532s, but i only have one at any given time to test a pptp link.
(my other rb’s are 400+ miles away chugging away! )
if it matters they will have to be bridged wirelessly but from my tests that only adds 10-15% to cpu usage..im just now worried at the last hour that the cpus wont handel vpn at like 20-30mbit.
There’s really nothing difficult about it. If you are running bandwidth tests originating from one router with a target of the other router, then it may be less than 20Mb. If you are running tests across the routers (where the source and destinations are not the routers themselves) then you shoulod hit >20Mb. Bandwidth tests consume resources as they have to generate packets - using other devices to generate these packets will improve your test results (and more of a real world test anyway).
If the RB is doing the actual encryption I doubt you will get that speed because of the limited CPU. If you are simply passing / routing the traffic then it should be fine - traffic is traffic, it doesn’t matter if its vpn or anything else. You didn’t specify if you were using the rb as the endpoint or just a router inbetween.
