Why Windows 10 and 11 cannot connect to the Mikrotik PPTP server?

Hi.
I have some mikrotik routers that I configured PPTP server on them. Until two days ago everything was OK.
But now windows 10 and 11 connot connect to these pptp servers. Older versions of windows, Smart Phones, Other routers and … still connect properly.
Settings for vpn connection in both windows (7 and 11) are same.
one of these PPTP servers runned on v 6.48.3 and others runned on 7.x

The following image is screenshot of PPTP Server logs for both client try to connect (win 7 connected, win 11 disconnected) :

hello

did you do any windows update before this happened?

well, let us be fair - don’t put any unnecessary burden to MT side alone. sometimes other systems too being the cause

Do not underestimate users…PPTP is ancient, use at least IPSEC or Wireguard (when using RouterOS v7.*).
Kudos to Windows

While Mac drop PPTP long ago, pretty sure it’s still supported on windows 11.

You may want to check the encryption settings on Windows for the PPTP connect – likely want to explicitly use MSCHAPv2 on both side. Also, on the Mikrotik side did you change any of default-encryption profile setting for another VPN? The PPP profiles are used by several of the VPN types…but if you change settings, that could mess up PPTP…

As said above…if you have a choice, there better protocols than PPTP…

@ erlinden,

have you ever count how many clicks you have to make between pptp and IPsec to get them work? :joy:

CLI  so…no

Fair point, simplicity was lost in VPNs at some point. But the VPN checkbox in QuickSet does setup L2TP automatically.

@ amm0

yes, i don’t mind with that l2tp in winbox quick setup.

but… again, have you ever count how many clicks you have to make for your windows based road warrior l2tp client to get them work? both for the server and the client :joy:

no no no… I’m just kidding :joy: have a nice weekend folks :+1:t2:

Yes, a Windows 10 update did come out some time or another in the past week. I don’t remember exactly when, but every one of my Win 10 computers and my Server 2019 had updates recently. I don’t have anything running Windows 11.

Perhaps enabling “debug” as topic in logging would yield more clues on what’s going on for you during PPTP session establishment.

i have several win10 stations up to date using multiple VPN working Ok

Perhaps enabling “debug” as topic in logging would yield more clues on what’s going on for you during PPTP session establishment

i really like this one :+1:t2:

ok @OP… show us the that pptp logs. show us that crystal ball

because @ chechito said the other way around -

Well, now that I read myself again  … maybe use “pptp” as topic as well to make sure.

@ amm0

maybe use “pptp” as topic as well to make sure.

can you make my life easier?? :joy:

@ rextended was busy helping the other OP how to script deleting pppoe username and password twice a day…

and now you asked me to debug and find pptp logs??

how many pipe should I use?

:debug [ find topic = “pptp” ] ??

my fingers crippled… that’s why I don’t like that devops term :joy:

don’t tell me that there’s reject at the end of the rules :joy:

No. I didn’t. Maybe they updated automatically. But i didn’t see any new installed update in update history.

As I said, the MikroTik router still serves to other devices properly.
But Just Windows 10 and 11 clients can’t connect correctly. they connect for a bit time (about a second) and will be disconnect rapidly.

Someone mentioned me?

Default settings(***) on RouterOS 6.48.7 and default settings on Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) 22H2 19045.3086 (1000.19041.1000.0)
work without problems (tested only for 20 minutes, I couldn’t stay any longer with that now obsolete vpn turned on.).

***: Just enabling server and create the secret.

As usual, these topic titles are wrong. (if it works for me…) And as usual, not a single line of Export
If one person has a problem, for an unspecified reason, obviously the whole world must have the same problem, it is never possible for the user to be wrong.
The title of this topic should be “Help please: I can’t get PPtP to work on windows 10 and 11”

Well, I think in this case the title is not too bad. It does not put the blame on MikroTik and it does not warn the whole world not to update RouterOS.

+1

@ fvaseghi

i am sorry, i and the other members just coloring the day. it’s weekend, so let us all and you - get some rest a little bit

ok. back to you,

yes. we read those on your previous post.

as @ amm0 suggested,

let’s have a look at your pptp server logs and compare it with those win10,11 problematic links ie. which remote macaddress, which ip has broken vpn?.

how did those clients connected to your pptp server? as road warrior or something else?

how many pptp clients connect to your server in single window? did you have enough ip for those clients?
