Hello,
I’m currently working on a Wi-Fi access point (AP) setup for the school and I have a question that I hope you can help me with:
The length of our school is 50 meters long (fifth floors), with classrooms on two sides. Each floor has 7-8 classrooms, and each classroom has around 15 laptops or iPads, so how many Mikrotik cap APs should I install on each floor?
I have a CCR1036-8G-2S+ router, can I set up on it these commands:
a) A connection to the network must be with a Mac address,
b) I need to set up a monthly limit for each student,
c) I need to set up an internet speed limit for student group,
d) I need to know where students use a school internet traffic,
e) I need to set up a white and black list, so students can’t open some websites, is it possible in Mikrotik.
ad 2): a lot too complicated with Mikrotik. Better use some vendor with Cloud controller that gives you all these insights and possibilities out of the box. I guess Zyxel is not too bad.
Its not as easy as just saying use X numbers of APs I’m afraid, there is a fair few factors that need to be considered (wall thickness, distance, channel planning etc)
I would first recommend getting the floor plans for each floor, as this will help the physically planning / placement.
There are free Wi-Fi tools you can use to then work out the AP placement from providing floor plans (based on coverage / channels / transit power etc) , which then will give you an idea of a rough AP count you could need.
I would also recommend to look at YouTube for some example how to plan Wi-Fi deployments (there is plenty of good free content) , which may help give a better understanding, and some ideas of what needs to be done.
