WinBox window closes automatically when accessing router

I"m using Chateau 5G with RouterOS 7.10.2 and since few days I’m having a funny glitch with using WinBox (Win 11) to connect to it.
Anyway whenever I try to use WinBox (3.39) to connect to my router WinBox instantly closes without reporting any errors. I’ve searched forum and found some users had same issue but none of the provided solutions worked in my case.
I cannot exactly pinpoint when it started happening as I’m not accessing router so often but the last major issue I had with it was for some reason when it froze and I’ve had to reset it to factory defaults and afterwards restored a backup to it.
I haven’t changed any network settings What could I be missing? At least I can still access it via web interface but really don’t understand what happened to WinBox.

Thank you for any ideas.

I have the same issue. Winbox closes immediately after connecting to remote router. Winbox 64bit v.3.42

But can you access it via browser/webfig?

Does Winbox behave the same if you connect via IP or via MAC?

Webfig works, but it’s not as useful as Winbox.

Can’t test that. I’m not in the same L2 segment.

Tested via Internet connecting to WAN and to VPN address - same result.

Yep, but if you have access with webfig, you can export the configuration and post it for review, instructions (for Winbox, but Webfig is similar enough), here:

The most likely cause (on the Mikrotik side) is something "wrong" in firewall rules or a mis-categorization of interfaces in interface list together with the set for mac-winbox.

BEFORE that, can you try with Winbox from another computer?
It could be also something in the OS you are running on your PC.

You should try upgrading to WinBox 3.43 first. That was a bug that it fixed.

What's new in v3.43:

*) update support for new field types (used by future RouterOS versions);
*) fix possible crash when restoring session config;

MikroTik · Downloads

This may be caused by having too many windows open in the session. Try connecting to a local router via Winbox, close all active windows within it, save the session, and then log out. After that, try connecting to the remote router and see whether it remains stable. If you don’t have any local router to perform this procedure, try connecting using a new, clean session.

Ive experienced this same exact issue on and off for at least a year with Winbox 3 when I started upgrading our AS to v7. It happened to me just yesterday and im on v3.43

When it happens, I can always login with Winbox 4 (any v4 version works to back in the early BETA days). Im gradually pushing myself to use v4 more often as im stubborn.

v.3.43 is same story. Not fixed for sure. But it works ok with v.4

Filling the story - the self closing winbox started happening first when i connect to the WAN interface, then I switched to VPN interface and it worked for some time. But eventually it got tired and now it works with v.4 only. Didn’t managed to fix it v.3.43.

You can also try going to %APPDATA%\MikroTik\WinBox\sessions and delete/rename the .viw session files corresponding to your devices.

That did the trick. Thank you!

Whatever it was, deleting the session fixed it.
