Migration process from our old phpBB instance to Discourse is now done

Another thing: the “unread” button only appears if some thread has unread topics by us. Otherwise it goes away. This is a bade decision, since the user looks for the button, doesn’t find, and goes looking elsewhere.

Yes, we could argue that one would learn that it only appears when it’s greater than zero. Still bad design, since people new to the forum will get lost looking to it.

How I miss NNTP… It was sad to see it declining and being substituted with… well, this.

It looks like syntax highlighting isn’t enabled in this instance at all.

Appears to use highlight.js internally*, which does not have RouterOS.

i.e. Highlight.JS is loaded in the HTML source:

 <meta id="data-discourse-setup" ... data-highlight-js-path="/highlight-js/forum.mikrotik.com/600885de53a0c5dcaf15540b83e94aafa44c5313.js"

You can register grammars in highlight.js, so maybe MiktoTik can add a registerLanguage() and with the needed grammars.

But I’m not sure it trigger on ```code tags, since even JS does not provide colors (at least in Discource’s preview)… but I haven’t look that far.

The new forum [Discourse] is terrible… I feel this is a slap in the face for us as a community and MikroTik enthusiasts. The current theme is less than ideal for us posting our issues and reading through posts; it’s a disaster. Way to silence us vocal folks. This will deter most from posting here… perhaps that was their goal.

@MIkroTik Team – Look at the theme/layout that Cambium is using for their Discourse forum… MUCH better. Why not insteadXenForo??

This is childs play… We’re seeing a trend lately with MikroTik [cough, Winbox4] and why we have such bad taste in mouth and leaving for other vendors that better suite our current use case.

But MIkroTik doesnt care. I feel as if alot of decisions are not properly vetted and tested.

That’s why XenForo exists.

It’s a perfectly normal forum that scales well, maintains well and is modern. Migration from phpbb is easy.

Don’t know whose idea this was and why. Perhaps maybe let people older than 25 make such decisions in the future?

I concur with this. I am getting older myself, but still considered “young”. The amount of less experienced programmers and devs are not that great at proving out new systems. They get excited and run with it. Unfortunately, way of things in current landscape… look at the new “LiquidGlass” from fruit company.

Of course I’m clicking the button just below the post, I’m not so stupid.
But sometimes it shows as reply, sometimes not.

Now it shows as a reply… Previous time it wasn’t.

It does.

It even has a theme that makes the output look like in Winbox.

Now that post is not the latest one and there is still no reply indication. Though, if I try to edit it, the editing form shows that it’s a reply.

Well that’s good news. It should be just one line to do the registerLanguage('routeros',...) in highlight.js someplace in the forum config.

Looks very very bad on my side.. Previous look was much much better. Why you migrated to platform like this? Terrible

It was the latest post at the moment you made your post. Which means there is no other post between it and yours. That the condition for the reply marker (which normally links back to the post being replied to) to be hidden. There is no need for a helper element to jump to the other post when that post’s already right above your post.

Glad to see that the move to Discourse has been made, was wanting this for a few years now. Much more modern system.

However, in terms of profile picture, the Gravatar option is not working. It claims it cannot find my email address on Gravatar. I’m guessing the forum is prevented from being able to get to the Gravatar website/API. I am on other Discourse servers where the Gravatar works so it seems to be a problem just with the MikroTik one.

It’s not the latest post anymore. And there is still no indicator. Looks at the screenshot above and at the post itself.

I bolded the text above for a reason :winking_face_with_tongue:

I was on the old forums for 13 years. I’m all for updating UI, functionality and security

BUT…

I’m really struggling to like this new platform/theme/whatever. I think it’s going to cause engagement with the forums to sharply decline.

We already have Discord and it’s great for realtime chat but not following/searching complex issues over a long period of time.

This new “forum” platform feels like phpbb and discord had a baby nobody wanted.

Well, I got it probably. The reason is that there are no other posts in between. It would be more clear if you bolded “no other post between it and yours”

I was using phpBB already since early 2000.
It’s quite a change, true, but personally I am not disliking it that much.
Still trying to find my way for certain things but so far it works out fine for me.

Besides, the ONLY thing everyone can be sure of nowadays is that things will … change.

Now, since you mention it, if there is one thing I really dislike, it’s Discord.

Data will prove that speculation out, or not.

But what definitely causes engagement to drop is when the forum is down more often than up because it can’t keep up with the load, as was the case for the past several months.

Net, this change is a very good thing.

Even if we grant that the new skin is ugly — I do not, but there’s no accounting for taste — up and ugly beats down and pretty every working day of the week.
