Migration process from our old phpBB instance to Discourse is now done

Now, since you mention it, if there is one thing I really dislike, it’s Discord.

Thank you! I thought I am the only one who can’t deal with this “infinity chat” like Slack twin.

I don’t dispute the need for a modern platform at all but I’m not sure this was the best of the available options.

From reading the threads, there were plenty of other choices that wouldn’t have resulted in a dramatic change

Yeah, you are right about my wordings. Anyway that’s a “feature” that can be turned off:

https://meta.discourse.org/t/replying-indicator-doesnt-show-if-its-replying-to-a-post-right-above/238458

So maybe you can send @krisjanis a request?

MT, please remove this delay. It leads to postponed erroneous e-mail notifications for the messages that I’ve already viewed on the forum.

After figuring out, I’m OK with such behavior. Thank you.

Is there some equivalent to the “Active Topics” in old forum — with read/unread marks?

It’s really the “read” and “unread” state I cannot seem to figure out. I can’t tell if already look at something or changed since my last view.

The lack of this “metadata” is not conducive the regular readers/posters since I really don’t know how to manage the “inbox” (i.e. “Active Topics” and “My Posts”) — which all had read/unread marks.

:light_bulb: Apparently you can “unpin” posts yourself — which one grip with the new “Latest” view in discourse, since “Active Topics” used not show them there. Which made the scroll worse since I had to scroll just to see most recent post.

If a post was deleted, isn’t it supposed to be really deleted, instead of being virtually deleted and ability to see the contents?

I had the same question and did a web search, which found a post by a Discourse central mucky-muck who said the current behavior is a feature. Marking everything as read makes all posts equal from an engagement standpoint. If a post isn’t interesting, it is considered a good thing — in this view — that you do not read it because that allows the software to filter that out of lists of truly popular posts.

The closest thing to what you want under this new scheme is Topics → New. That will drop old unread stuff down the list, where you will likely ignore it on getting down to it again, preserving the signal to the software, “This is not interesting to me.”

I don’t want to mark everything read. I just want some indicator whether I’ve opened the post, or not. And if it changes, system marks unread again, and moves to top of “active topics” / “latest”.

Open to alternatives… But not looking to have a workflow around “bookmarks reminder” — which I saw in thread about discourse, perhaps same one.

Right now, I cannot figure out from the “list view” if I already look at something or not. There is an “unread” button than can be enabled in settings. But I’m not sure how read get set, nor how it’s actually displayed.

@krisjanis I would prefer to have the mailing list mode enabled for the MikroTik Discourse forum. Would enable the dinosaurs who prefer using a more “old-school” email list interaction. To still interact with the forum from the E-mail inbox. Rather than always having to use the Discourse Web-interface (which is not to everybody’s liking, gleaning from the comments here and r/mikrotik {1, 2}).

MikroTik Discourse

Modern doesn’t mean better nor good.
Hard to scroll smoothly, mobile first layout looks orrible on regular/big screens.
Discourse? No thanks!

You’d almost think the world had ended because of the switch to Discourse.

Sure, there are lots of nice config options and add-ons, BUT it’s kind of odd that MikroTik didn’t sort out a default configuration with colored categories and tags, navigation settings, themes, colors, and highlight.js for ROS already from the start. And why even began the migration before all that was in place? If they’d just set everything up properly in a lab first, they could’ve just copied the settings over in one go when the migration was ready. It all feels a bit ad hoc…

But don’t despair, it’ll be fixed within a year or two!

≅ It will be resolved when it is resolved. No timelines promised. The usual Modus Operandi we expect.

This is called Agile workflow.

Agile is continuous planning. This feels more like no planning at all using the well-known T&E method.

Or RDS method in Mikrotik jargon.

… AND talking a lot about the enormous amount of work that it is done and that should be done AND talking a lot about how clever is the method AND talking a lot about how smart the scrum master is, AND …

At least the Mikrotik approach saves us from this senseless blabbering.

Took me a while to get logged into the new system. Not sure if Mikrotik may of corrected a bad email address I had -or- somebody on my side corrected an email setting.
Like anything newer and updated , the new looks on this forum will take some getting used to.
Hope this new forum software performs well and lasts a long time

It looks like the import did not carry over the Closed state of the threads? IIRC this thread has been closed in the old forum Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s) ( now shutdown as of April 1st 2025 ) - #1094 by chechito

maybe that topic was reopened

I looked up some XenForo examples and indeed, it provides that familiar cozy true forum interface. I wish MikroTik went with it instead.
Discourse gets the job done, but it’s like comparing sitting in a nice comfortable chair vs on a hard wooden stool. Both are functional, but the experience is vastly different.
