we will be duplicating our current gw setup (we have Astaro appliances) and I am looking to get 2 devices for either end of an Site-to-Site VPN Tunnel.
I am aming at 50 Mbps throughput (with max MTU size, that is approx 35k pps) that is with bridging and firewall, so I was wondering which is the right one to get.
Sure, a pair of RB1100X2 will do the job, but I would like to save some resources for other projects.
Looking at figures, even an RB2011-IL will do the job, but I don’t know what impact does encryption have on the performance.
As there is no performance figures for VPN performance, I just decided to crowdsource some info.
Okay then.
After digging into the article slech provided, I figured the following:
RB1200 65 Mbps UDP/40 Mbps TCP
RB1100AH approx 100 Mbps (unclear whether TCP or UDP)
RB1100AHx2 approx 200 Mbps (unclear whether TCP or UDP)
What I could benchmark as performance figures for an RB2011L-SI (600 Mhz atheros) was 35 Mbps using SSL tunnel (SSTP client) and for an RB750GL we could get up to 19 Mbps on an SSTP tunnel (terminated both ends with Routerboard the same hardware).
This is like comparing apples to peaches, but still gives some VPN troughput info.
What I will get in my case however will be an Level4 license for x86 as I have outdated hardware with plenty of power (Pentum HT 3.4 with ECC RAM) which using a test license performs in the 100 Mbps++ segment and will cost me mainly electricity to run it.
