Regarding the remaining storage space of the hAP ac² device with wifi-qcom-ac package

For old devices based on the ARM/ARM64 architecture, the Wi-Fi performance has greatly improved with the help of the wifi-qcom-ac package.

Among my client base, there are many hAP ac² devices still in service, and I hope to ensure that all my clients can benefit from the new Wi-Fi drivers.

The newer versions of RouterOS occupy more and more storage space. With the hAP ac² having only 16MB of storage, it is no longer possible to pursue the newer system versions until Mikrotik officially splits and removes system modules.

I spent some time collecting and organizing the remaining space for various system versions, and casually shared it on the forum for everyone’s reference.

The following is the situation when only the routeros-arm.npk and wifi-qcom-ac-arm.npk packages are installed (in fact, only these two can be installed).

v7.13.5:708KiB(Upgrade);784KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);788KiB(NetInstall)
v7.14.3:388KiB(Upgrade);460KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);464KiB(NetInstall)
v7.15.3:824KiB(Upgrade);896KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);904KiB(NetInstall)
v7.16.2:776KiB(Upgrade);848KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);856KiB(NetInstall)
v7.17.2:432KiB(Upgrade);496KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);508KiB(NetInstall)
v7.18.2:320KiB(Upgrade);384KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);392KiB(NetInstall)
v7.19.2:224KiB(Upgrade);292KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);300KiB(NetInstall)
v7.20b4:92KiB(Upgrade);160KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);168KiB(NetInstall)

MikroTik updated to version 7.20beta5 on July 3, 2025,and updated version 7.19.3 on July 7, 2025, with the following updates:

*) system - reduced RouterOS ARM package size;

It’s great to see MikroTik’s attention to users with small-capacity models in their existing product lineup.

PS: small-capacity models are: hAP ac²,cAP ac,cAP XL ac and Chateau LTE6

After testing, the remaining storage of the hAP ac² device in several cases is as follows:

v7.20b5:360KiB(Upgrade);428KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);428KiB(NetInstall)
v7.19.3:488KiB(Upgrade);552KiB(Reset Config After Upgrade);552KiB(NetInstall)

MikroTik still stubbornly does not want to remove the driver that is only needed for the RB4011 and the Audience and make a leaner version named wifi-qcom-ipq. This would return the storage requirement back to 7.15.3’s level or better.

In 7.20beta4 they have this change item

*) smips - reduced package size, removed hotspot feature and provide it as a separate package;

Which proves that package splitting for size reason is still possible.

see CAP AC - wifi-qcom-ac

I tried 7.20beta4 and my hap ac2, used for testing, ran out of free space :pensive_face:
I really hope MikroTik finds a solution for this problem..
