Realtek RTL8156 2.5G USB Ethernet for ROS7?

Hi Mikrotik developers,

I’m trying to connect a Realtek 2.5G USB ethernet adapter to my new RB5009UG, but I found that the device cannot be identified as an ethernet interface in the system.
Is Realtek RTL8156 not yet supported in ROS7?

I have 2 2G internet connections and I would like to let my second one have the 2.5G connection in the network.
The USB3 port of the RB5009UG should have enough bandwidth for the 2.5G USB ethernet.

Regards,
Koxle

I second this question. I know that ROS7 is currently based on kernel 5.6.3 and propoer support for rtl8156 has been added in linux kernel 5.14. Can we expect added support for this card? Or next kernel bump will happen when ROS8 arrives?

connect adapter to router, generate supout.rif file and send it to support@mikrotik.com with brief explanation. After that we can add it to RouterOS

Thanks for the reply @antonsb. Currently I am going on vacation, but when I am back within one week, I will generate this file.

I am also looking forward to RTL8156B 2.5G USB support, did you follow antonsb’s instructions?

I did it in July 11th and they said they will work on it and will be available on some next release, so we have to wait

I also have sent the support file around the same time and Got the same response as mileperhour.

Any good news?

I’ve seen rtl8153 mentioned in release notes of 7.12beta so I checked it, but still no dice. Since 7.12 is already in rc, we will have to wait to at least 7.13 I guess…

Hi Guys,
I have upgraded my hap Ax3 to 7.12rc4, but it is still not recognized as an Ethernet port.
Did anyone else test it?

As I wrote, we probably should not expect RTL8156 support in 7.12 as only RTL8153 was added. Maybe we will see it in 7.13.

Sorry,
I misread RTL8153 as RTL8156; I realized it after commenting but couldn’t delete my comment.
Thank you.

Hello,
Can we expect RTL8156 to be added in foreseable future? I have SUP-121523 and SUP-126539 reported and these two issues combined cause me to use RB5009 in 1Gbe mode even though I pay my ISP each month good chunk of money for 2Gbe connection I cannot use. RB5009 itself was not cheap. But issues I reported during last 6 months remain unresolved and questions raised through both support panel and here on forums remain unanswered (I asked about it in beta release topics of 7.13 or 7.14). It’s getting to a point where I am willing to cancel my subscription and/or switch to a different router just because of this issue, because from my perspective, I bought quite premium router + service which is basically unsupported.

I contacted support myself as well for this topic, and Sergejs from the support requested a supout file.
I sent it yesterday.

is it possible to use the Realtek Nic 2,5 gigabit usb adapter on RB5009 or HaP Ax3 devices now?

7.20beta9 - still no support for this rtl chip on rb5009

so sad(
cya next year guys

Dear Mikrotik frieds - can you please give us an update if you still plan to implement this feature that many of us waiting for few years now...

I understant it is hard to estimate when it will be released, but any info like we are already working on it.... or we have other priorities now we like to return to this once some spare time remains... or we are not interested anymore to solve this.

Its the end of 2025 approaching, and here i am, with my new shiny UGREEN USB 2.5G adapter that just happen to be on this exact 8156 chip. Hey there, folks!

Hey there. I also tried to connect the UGREEN USB 3.0 to RJ45 adapter (RTL8156BG) to my MikroTik hAP ax³ (7.20.4 firmware), but it did not work. However, the router detected the device under the USB section (it appears as a “USB 10/100/1G/2.5G LAN” type device). I reached out to Mikrotik support and got this answer:

“We do not have any plans to add support in the nearest future as we are working on other feature support, but if more users will request it, we will see how this can be implemented sooner. A request for RTL8156BG support is forwarded to our developers.”

Unfortunately, it appears that they don’t currently plan to add support for this feature. It’s frustrating, because I need a full speed (2-2.5 GB from my ISP) to transfer to my PC.

Perhaps someone also needs this feature as badly as I do, and I am calling on you to put this request in their support team's hands to accelerate the addition of this feature.

So what do you expect from us? We are mostly same kind of users as you? Did you already requested the change?

On the other hand I wonder how many routers' brands offers aout of the box possibility to connect any unknown external device?
