Considering that the license is tied to the NAND flash drive's serial number, and if you replace NAND, you'll lose the license too? Yeah, I'm sure I'd rather replace 1GB microSD drive every once in a while than lose the license.
And you expect to have that licence SD card installed in USB modem's stick?

to the Mikrotik's router: no need or even IMHO no way to save license on the external drive
to PC running ROS: just use other standard card reader that works with ROS
to virtual machne: there is virtual disk

Having a microSD card in a USB modem stick makes it double as a USB storage stick where you can store files instead of wearing out the onboard flash.

There is a topic: "How many times yor NAND died?" and the conslusion is: we can count it on fingers on one or maybe two hands or maybe both legs.
On the other hand 
I agree that more device serviced would be nice but on the other other hand focusing on servicing all possible devices is a waste of time.
Aside from the wear of the flash (I have seen routers where that is a problem, but they are older types like RB2011 and RB750r1/r2) the storage space on the microSD card can be a lot more than in the router itself.
I think a normal Linux system sees it without problem, but I am not sure.

Since 2007 never a single problem with this, even in devices with the user-manager in the NAND Flash

If everyone is (correctly) advised to try and minimize as much as possible writes to NAND this is not too surprising.
We need some more accurate metrics, like:
- theoretical number of writes before wear becomes relevant
- whether this theoretical limit actually applies in practice
- average writes per day (over - say - one week operations)
to be able to assess an actual reasonable max amount of writes and duration of the nand.
But, having removable (expendable) storage surely would be an added feature allowing more freedom to write as much as you want.

Thanks for the update! Great to see the fixes for BGP, PPPoE, and routing filters. I was recently checking a date difference tool while testing a similar setup. Will test 7.20.4 on a few devices and report back if anything comes up.
If you don’t use flash - it don’t die. In my plans using flash as storage for entware installation (yep, i want entware on my rb951)

I don’t think it is possible on a RB951 - It is MIPSBE.

It's an undeniable fact that Mikrotik software is of poor quality.
Can't you choose other brands? For example, I only use Mikrotik devices for the node that forwards data from my local network to the internet because I can't accept having an unstable switch and wireless AP on my local network.
